New Range Bag - Suggestions?

I guess I'm a bit of a cro-magnon. I use a couple of milk crates. They hold a lot of stuff, and I think I paid about $4.95 apiece for them at some place like Home Depot or Lowes.

And you can get something similar to milk crates that fold up and have wheels so you don't have to carry the crates. I always go for wheels whenever I can. Getting to old for carrying. We got ours at Office Depot.

as a former bass fishing addict, I always have a good number of "tackle bags" on hand. They work great for range bags. If I carry pistols in their original plastic cases, the cases fit nicely into the bag, or the handguns are carried in zippered gun rags in the bag. The tackle bags also have plenty of zippered pouches for the small stuff. I keep one bag for handgun use, one for rifle use, and one for shotgun use, and keep a supply of earplugs, 3" shoot-n-see targets, markers, maintenence equipment, etc in the bags. For $20-25 each, and the fact that these things seem to last forever, they work well for me.

No kids so I have to use wheels. Glad you got a big son to help his dad.

I stopped in Academy today to take a look at their range bags and bought their Competition Range Bag. I was a little hesitant because it is smaller than the bag I currently use, but decided to give it a shot. I have since cleaned out my old bag (I still can't figure out why I thought I could possibly need four types of gun oil during a range trip) and organized the new one. The goal with the purchase was to find a bag that could hold all of my gear, be durable, and be fairly discrete. I wanted to be able to leave it in my truck without being able to see what was inside.

In my current configuration, I don't have much room for ammo, but I typically carry that in a separate ammo can anyway. I was able to get multiple sets of eye and ear protection in there, as I often help new shooters out and like to have it on hand for students in classes. These could easily be removed and replaced with ammo if I was headed to the range on my own.

I'm very pleased with the bag, I think it may be the exact same bag that Midway sells. It is completely padded, even between interior pockets, and came with two pistol rugs, detachable ammo bag, and a brass collector. It also appears to be very durable. All in all, I would highly recommend it!

I've always been intrigued by the Maxpedition Sabercat Versipack. It has a carry handle or you can opt to wear it around your waist. I've had situations where I was carrying several pistol boxes plus a rifle slung over the shoulder and having to hand carry a bag made it more difficult. Being able to carry your ammo/mags/tools/supplies/etc around your waist would definitely take off some of that load.

But in the end, I don't visit the range that often and can't justify the price. I've been using an old paratrooper bag to carry my things whenever I do make that trip to the range. It's not the most comfortable thing to have across your shoulder when you have hundreds of rounds of ammo in it, but it works.
