I think that urban or rural survival is possible for the immediate future in the aftermath of any great calamity, but based solely on the circumstances and the resulting conditions.

After the calamity, is the city populated? If so, how densely?
Was there massive radiation affecting water supplies and canned goods?
If you are a typical city-dweller and have been so for most of your life, are you even suited to survival in the wilds regardless of your desperation level?

As stated elsewhere in this thread, you cannot foresee what exact scenario would apply until it actually happens.
