There's nothing wrong with training on your own, but I wouldn't let that stop you from coming out. Just forget about the clock and work on doing all the steps safely. As a bonus, you'll have a safety officer right there with you to help you--just let them know you are a new shooter.
Venus Pax wrote:I still need to get a gun that falls within the rules. Right now, I have a .380 and a .38 special. I'm not as fond of my .38 special, since the trigger is more difficult to pull & I'm not as accurate.

I'm considering a Springfield Armory 9mm. My dad owns one and I really like that gun. I used it to qualify for my CHL. I find it very easy to use.
If you like, I'd be happy to loan you my Glock 19. It's much like jbirds1210's Glock 17, but a little smaller--a fraction of an inch in lengh of grip and about an inch of slide. You can even work with both to see which size you like better. I also bet you could find someone with PSC-IDPA that would loan you an XD. Guns and holsters can get expensive. It is really great to be able to try before you buy.

Don't wait ....

Venus ...

Don't think of IDPA as competing. Yes, technically it is, or you can operate that way. But just think of it as a way to assess and improve your skills.

Another way to look at it is the ONLY person you are really competing with is YOURSELF. The sooner you start shooting it, the sooner you will see where your strengths and weaknesses are, and you can start working on them.

And you're going to find that the other folks will generally bend over backwards to help you along.

Thanx,
TraCoun

I do plan to train some though.
Okay, in the spirit of the Godfather movies, I'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse. Come to PSC next Sunday around 3:00 p.m. and Marc and I will set up a few simple props and work with you for a couple of hours. We can cover everything you'll be doing in a match and can give you some one-on-one coaching. Who knows, PPM may even join us.

Chas.

Where do you shoot IDPA? I've been going to Elm Fork Shooting Range.....

I have to agree it's better to GO and walk through and shoot than it is to go watch or train before hand. I went to watch a match first and wound up wishing I had brought my pistol/ammo. I've typically run through about 100 rounds per match and have learned alot already. If I can just refrain from getting trigger happy half way through a stage, I'd do much better. Must learn control............

The Shooting Gallery in Fort Worth. http://www.ctidpa.com http://www.winchestergallery.com

There is a match the first 3 Thursdays of each month. That means there's a match TONIGHT.
Sign up by 6, hammer at 6:30. We're usually done and gone about 9pm.
It's indoors and the shots are not too far but the MD comes up with some craziness so it's always a fun time.

Also check out http://www.dfwshooters.org for ALL local IDPA and USPSA match info.

Age_Ranger, I shoot at Elm fork too although I've not been able to make it out there since the BUG match on August 30th. :???:

Well, I met a few new shooters tonight but nobody identified themselves as being from this forum.
It was a great match though.
