CDNN has the S&W M&P15 for $599 after a $100 rebate. I dont know if that is an instant rebate, or if you have to mail it off, the ad does not specify. It is on page 37 of the catalog.

I am going to wait until the gun show next weekend in Pasadena. If i do not find an AR there for a good price, I will most likely order the S&W through CDNN.

I say order the AK first. Cheaper, more reliable, and a hoot to shoot. Watch out for the spam cans of ammo. Its corrosive and requires a little more cleaning after a range session. Not the end of the world but factor a little bit more on ammo if you want non-corrosive. I like silver bear and wolf in my AK.

Just some handy info from my experience:

1. Any cheap 74 you buy will be ugly, have bad furniture, sharp edges, etc, etc. If you want a "nice" one, you will get to AR prices. Depending on your preference, you might prefer this. I have a "nice" AK-47 clone and I love that rifle. I guess if you can find a new Saiga 74 clone to convert, you can end up with the best of both worlds if you are careful.
2. Get one with the side optics mount so you have a ready option for optics. There are mounts that replace the forward grip, but I haven't used them.
3. Not all 74 magazines are the same. I have two 5.45 rifles. A Tantal version and a WASR-2. The first has a tight mag well, the 2nd a wide one. I was lucky in that the bakelite mags I have work well in the Tantal and the wider polymer coated mags work well in the WASR-2. Other than the stock mag, the metal mags I have tried don't quite fit the Tantal. Your experience may be different, just an FYI.
4. Ammo types can be limited. The cheapest ammo is corrosive and will corrode your barrel and gas tube if you don't clean it promptly.
5. The Wolf and other imported ammo is not a whole lot more expensive and my be worth getting a case for more casual plinking.

On the AR side
1. 223 ammo has been coming down lately though it is still double the cost.
2. You CAN get a decent AR that will be very reliable.
3. You don't have a buy the entire AR at one time. You can assemble the AR in parts or build the entire thing from parts. A lower receiver can be built very cheaply. You can also buy a better lower such as LMT at a show. You can then shop around and get the best upper you can afford.
4. An AR with decent iron sights will shoot more accurately than the AK on average. With a flat top, it will have much more readily available optics options.
5. Magazines and parts are available from more people. AR mags will be much cheaper than AK-74 mags. AK-47 mags can still be had cheap.

I have several AR15's and one AK.The AK i got is a WASR 10/63 and its real fun to shoot but not accurate at all.
AR15's in my opinion are the way to go first. So many options and optics etc to pick from. They are very accurate
and dependable. The flat-tops are the way to go.Prices are really coming down on AR's also as well as ammo.
Its also very easy to build your own AR15..buy a stripped lower, get a lower parts kit and put it together.easy stuff.
Then order a complete upper.I would suggest Bravo Co for a upper.Brownells has some excellant how to videos.

I just helped a freind of mine put his first AR 15 lower together and he did most of the work with my supervision.
He ordered a upper from Bravo for $520 with the carrier and bolt...Chrome Lined 16 inch M4...He is real excited.
