Department letter. And yes Texas Troopers carry 357 sigs. They have had those since they got rid of the S&W 686 in 357 mag.
I always confuse DPS with Texas Rangers .... did Rangers ever (or still do) carry 1911 .45s? I think Rangers is basically a subset of DPS anyway, right? When I was dropping off my CHL instructor application paperwork at DPS main offices in Austin I walked through a little "museum" they have set up in the lobby and there were some 1911s under glass - but don't remember when or to whom it said they were issued. Cool little display if you're ever in that lobby - shows all the various guns, radios, cars, and other "equipment" used by DPS over the decades.

Take a trip up to Waco & visit the Texas Ranger Museum. You will go into 1911 overload with some of the beautiful guns that have been carried by Texas' finest.

DPS issued Sig 220 .45s for a while then opted for the 357 SIG because of improved barrier penetration.
I own two M&P 40s they are awesome guns both of them will digest any ammo fed them and the interchaingeable grip adapters make them user friendly for all hand sizes.

The gun is specifically designed for military and police use
semantics, perhaps.... I know the M&P name has historical significance, but I really would have preferred a 'non-authority' type name for these guns. Not that S&W cares what I think - I don't own any of their products.

Texas Rangers are a division of the TX DPS. Kinda like the USMC is a dept. of the USN.
