Personally I have shot and owned both, I think both of those weapons are awesome. Now to clear a few things up I have had my Xd40sc for a few years and literally have over 8k rounds down the pipe with no issues of any kind. I have never even seen one of my 5 Xd's have a double feed issue, and honestly the drop safety on the back is an added benefit to the weapon in my opinion. It makes the weapon safer to holster in my IWB holster and is very easy to manipulate. The only thing I would say is try it and see for yourself. If you feel that this weapon has too much recoil or is not necessarily suited for your shooting style you may try a Glock as the frame angle corrects this for many shooters. As for the M&P 40c the weapon is a great shooting weapon, it handles much different and with the changeable back strap it provides more options for you. This weapon may seem as it has less recoil than the Xd depending on your shooting style, also for me i can get all three of my grip fingers on this weapon when I can't on my Xdsc. This makes the M&P slightly harder to conceal(than the xdsc) but with the right holster they both disappear easily. As for dependability I never had any issues with mine and I probably put 5K rounds through it before my dad took the weapon over. He trusts his life to the weapon and prefers it because it has the thumb safety which he likes when holstering.
Whichever you chose I don't think you will be disappointed with either and really your comparing apples to oranges. I love both and they are weapons I would trust my life to.

I have the full sized M&P 45. I have never shot the XD in anything but 9mm, but I own several other .45s (1911s) and have shot other .45s (Glock, etc.) that I don't own, and I have to say that my M&P is the softest shooting .45 I've ever shot. Mechanically and ergonomically, I prefer the precision of 1911s, but I shoot my M&P better than I do my 1911s. I'm not exactly sure why that is, but I my impression is that it seems to control the recoil better.

Like I said, that is with a full sized pistol. I have no experience with the compact version, but I imagine that it would be similar.
