My instructor disscussed this. If it's a meeting with a government official then you are allowed to carry and a post office empleyee is a government official. Ianal so don't quote me on it.

Ahh yes there it is.
Pc 46.035 says
Unlawful carry
c. At any meeting with a government official.

i subsections ..... C do not apply unless inforced by 30.06 section.
I could not coppy it from the website because my phone would not allow me to but you can read this section and this chapter is where it states it. So my quotes are not straight from the book. Sorry

Smallestbodyman,

The mistake in your logic is that the meeting with a government employee is allowed by the state law, but banning post office carry is federal law. Federal law supersedes state law, every time.

Federal Buildings...yes (generally) prohibited. Properties...not so much. Title 18 US Code 930 makes it a federal misdemeanor to carry in a federal "facility" which has a definition remarkably similar to "premises" in Texas PC 46.035.

Most likely military bases are off limit. That is even more so after Fort Hood incident.

You are right.... They are subject to regulation by the base commander as authorized by law (Title 10), and every one that I have ever heard of has prohibited carry. I was referring to federal "civilian" property.

I would be interested to hear what happens to a civilian when criminally prosecuted for carrying contrary to military regulation. I'm sure it is possible, but sometimes the feds are more lenient than the state. I remember in the 1990's that the feds gave states jurisdiction to prosecute DUI under state law even when it happened on base.

The main body of federal is the United States Code, located at http://uscode.house.gov/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. The firearms parts are in title 18 (crimes), chapter 44 (firearms) sections 921 through 931 (located here: http://uscode.house.gov/download/pls/18C44.txt" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ).

The problem is you also need to know all of the various departmental rules which are passed administratively. They are embodied in the Code of Federal Regulations, which is here: http://www.gpoaccess.gov/cfr/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , but the actual laws can be spread throughout the whole CFR as each department makes their own rules and has their own sections.

the basic federal laws you really need to know are all on who can by a weapon from a licensed dealer, the law forbidding anyone convicted of family violence from having a gun, the law forbidding everyone from having a gun within 1000 feet of school (except CHL from that state), and the law forbidding anyone from having a gun on federal property. Unless you are a dealer, you won't get into much else with the federal stuff.
