A second version of the handicap is to use different size targets instead of varying the distance. This is even easier if you are using the paper plate suggestion. New guys get a dinner plate, shooters get a saucer size plate, etc.

One of the competitions we did in the academy was a stick breaking competition. This is especially fun for the experienced shooters. Just get some of the 1x 2 furring strips that are used for target frames (some places). First one to shoot the stick in half wins. It shows the difference between caliber and capacity almost as well as a dueling tree does. Speaking of which, you could see if the range has a dueling tree you can use. Those are always fun too.
