piro - U-21 (18 y/o or older) can buy and possess a handgun. They are only prohibited from purchasing a handgun from a Licensed FFL Dealer.piro wrote:< 21 to get a chl but can't buy a handgun still, might get some chuckles out of it.
Private transactions, gun show purchases and possession by gift are still OK for the U-21 folks...
Now - those same U-21 folks can not buy ammo for any handgun but they can buy it for Rifles and Shotguns...

OOPS!!! Sorry Jim - I failed to see your post...seamusTX wrote:A person who is under 21 cannot buy a handgun from a licensed dealer. If I understand the law correctly, he can buy one from a private party or posses one that was given to him (a legitimate gift or loan, not a straw purchase).piro wrote:As a cheap laugh you may want to mention the honorably discharged from armed forces law < 21 to get a chl but can't buy a handgun still, might get some chuckles out of it.

I know that's the law but ...TC-TX wrote:Now - those same U-21 folks can not buy ammo for any handgun but they can buy it for Rifles and Shotguns...
One day at Academy I was buying ammo and the manager was training a new cashier. She told him that buyers must be 18 or older to buy ammo. No distinction between handgun and long gun.
I've heard other places simply ask the young buyer if the ammo is for a handgun or rifle, and sell it if the buyer says rifle.
There are, of course, rifles in many common handgun calibers.
