its the very first rule guys "All guns are ALWAYS LOADED!"

Shot guns = Yes
Rifles = No

Too easy for a high powered round to travel further than intended.

Replaced the 00 Buck in my shotgun with Remington HD Ultimate Home Defense loads for the same reason.

I used to, but now that I'm off at college and the long guns are at home, they're all unloaded, decocked, and either in cases or the safe. I used to be kind of bad... I kept everything fully loaded to the +1 capacity, every magazine fully loaded, and ready to go, and all of it was defense ammo for the pistols, 00 buck for the shotguns, and the best hunting rounds I had for the rifles.

I think when I go back home though I'm not going this crazy. Because if somehow I go through over 100 rounds of pistol ammo, 30 rounds of shotgun, and 150 rounds of 5.56, something tells me that the remaining 30 rounds of other rifle ammo and 75 rounds of .22LR won't help much... That said, if I get through 100 rounds of pistol ammo in my own house, something is very very wrong... Hopefully by the time I have that all shot up Dad has loaded my AR, as I still keep the PMAGS loaded with the little cover on them...

A friend of mine is one of the Zombie apocalypse believers... He keeps a glock 17 with a 33rd mag in it and 5 more 33 rd mags all in a big plastic bag. Hanging off of his shower curtain. Freakin ridiculous. But I guess he's prepared... That is, of course, in addition to the fact that he carries a glock 26 with a couple of extra mags at all times...

My lever action 30-30 has 6 in the tube, but nothing chambered. My rifles are the last thing I'd grab, but even so, I think keeping them ready with rounds in the 'pipe' (not the chamber) is worth it "just in case".

Good grief would I hate to shoot it in my house though. I'm sure most of you know how loud these lever action carbines can be when shooting 30-30. It's not the most powerful rifle, but dang is it loud!

Handgun in night stand, all others in a large gun safe, and all either fully loaded or at least rounds in the 'pipe' or magazines.
First long gun I'd use is definitely a shotgun however.

One other thing... I'm proud we've made it this far without someone saying, and I hate it when people say this, "I a shotgun ready where I have to pump it, to get it loaded. That sound alone should scare anyone away."

Hearing people say that about shotguns is like nails on a chalkboard to me. It's a complete farce that people buy into and love to say at gun shops. /RANT.

From first hand experience, the mere utterance of the phrase "Brian, grab the shotgun" can be enough to cause an unwelcome "visitor" to change his mind and run for the exit. I actually felt bad for the guy.

Yup. Empty chamber, full magazine, safety on, bolt forward (action closed). I go a step further and flip up the covers on my optic and turn it to on setting brighter than what I normally prefer working nights. The optic gets shut off and closed at home though.

What optic are you running on your work gun?

only rifle i own is a scoped Remington 700 .270 for hunting, i keep it locked up and unloaded because it doesn't serve much of a purpose as a home defense gun. i do have an 870 tactical 12 gauge and a Mossberg 500 20 gauge that are always loaded and readily accessible.

How long do the batteries last with the optic on?
