Yes, as would cane, so obviously the reply was in reference to a "Baton" (if they were legal) and the Kubotan/Yawara or Koppo sticks some of us carry.
And as someone already noted, all of those things CAN be lethal, as well as your feet, hands, or even a rolled up magazine (if you know what you are doing).
But they aren't legal. That was my point.

Baton...you mean?
The rest mentioned ARE, and the subject of my original reply with respect to why someone would carry something other than a firearm. We are going two different directions with this.
Yes, baton illegal.

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, I was referring to a baton. I support citizens using legal weapons to protect themselves.

What would you carry handcuffs for?
For those occasions where after you stop the attack the other person is likely to live and might even recover enough in a short period of time to represent as a danger to yourself or others. And while you are waiting on the PD to haul him/her off to jail.
My opinion is that I am as nearly as likely to need my cuffs as I am to need my firearm.

To each his own I guess...
I'm not the police. If I ever have to use my weapon to stop an attack, and the fool is dumb enough to try something again, I will stop him again.
CHLer carrying handcuff reeks of 'mall ninja'.
My $0.02

I'm inclined to agree, but it really depends upon who is carrying them, what their training is and how and when they might use them.
I am hard pressed to imagine a scenario where the average CHLer would need them.
It has been discussed here before and there are other considerations beyond just the added danger it exposes you to. (hands on physical exchange).

Without training and hard cover, handcuffing someone alone is not advisable. Just my opinion.

Ok I need to calrify a few points. The primary focus of this post was to start us thinking that we need to get some laws changed for those of us who legally carry. Starting with some of the, in my view, less lethal options. Granted a baton can be used as a lethal weapon but as noted, and I agree, so can hand to hand combatants if they are trained. With that in mind here are a few things that some people might have missed out on.
1. Handcuffs - I am trained to use them and I do carry them. I will grant you that I more than likely will not have to use them I just prefer to have them on my person and in my system.
2. Batons - I am also trained to use these however due to state law I am FORBIDDEN from carrying these. I find that I prefer to have options in my carry system and do not agree with anyone telling me what I can and cannot carry on my person (within reason of course ie barret m107 as ccw lol)
3. I started this forum to raise the question about the legality of carrying a baton in hopes that some people like myself would send an email to there rep. and say hey I want the option of carrying this piece of equipment in my carry system.
4. As to why I want to carry some different gear than others it's simply a matter of taste and what a person chooses to carry. I prefer the .40 due to ballistic and firepower ratio others 9mm, others .45 and heck some guy might even be swinging a .50 GI around, with that said differnt flavors but all still viable to do the job it was designed to do and that is give someone who wishes to harm us or those around us a REALLY bad day!

Glockfan22 - This topic has been brought up before. Rather than campaigning for strictly "baton" carry, I would prefer that Texas would issue a concealed weapons permit similar to some other states. In the meantime, since I am not trained for the baton, nightstick, knife, etc., I will be happy with campus and parking lot carry. Thanks for your thoughts.

I have one of these:
http://www.whistlecreek.com/hawrootwalst.html
Click on the image to see the detailed picture of the thing...
This cane is stout. It is a veritable shileighli, and it is totally legal. I actually need to use it sometimes because of my back, but I'll tell you what... it is lighter than a baseball bat, but still quite substantial, and it is rock-solid. And I can swing it faster than I can swing a bat. If I hit someone with it, they are going down.
I bought this one very deliberately because I realized that, as a seemingly handicapped person, I might be a tempting target to someone with less than honorable intentions. Also, I still lived in California when I bought it, so CCW was out of the question. You might still get my money, but not without getting a heckofa whuppin'.
Anyway, it is a legal alternative to what you're talking about.

...handcuffs are neither illegal nor a weapon in Texas...there have been many times I carry them since I am no longer an LEO for such as OCW stated...and as a licensed security guard on an unarmed post(by customer request), a 5-cell C Maglite and a pair of handcuffs were very useful...and that length of Maglite is a great defensive weapon...trained with the baton both on the force and certified as a security officer...knowledge and a good light are powerful...usually keep a pair of cuffs readily accessible in the truck...

You can buy some really snazzy looking canes that would work well for defending yourself against an assailant.

This is pretty snazzy.

I went to Irving Gun show a couple of weeks ago and saw a much simpler one that was nothing more than wood turned to the bat shape with a handle and end on it. No flask. I don't think it said Louisville Slugger but the logo was a knock off. When I saw it I kind of wondered if it would be frowned on as a weapon. Sounds like that would not be a problem so it would be ok to use it (except maybe for the weight).

Unfortunately, the time to begin finding a Representative to author a bill is in the summer or fall before the semiannual legislature convenes. The gavel came down to open this session on January 11, and the legislative session ends May 30. There were 4,999 bills filed in the House, and 2,509 filed in the Senate.
March 11 was the deadline for filing bills and joint resolutions other than local bills, emergency appropriations, and bills that have been declared an emergency by the governor. So the earliest this issue can be brought up again in legislation is 2013.
