Very observant. I would pass.

And

The caliber of the gun is sometimes called .44 S&W.

The medallions on the grips look like they might say "Taurus" on them.

They are very blurry, but I believe this is true. BTW, my comment about the bluing is that S&W Model 629s were the stainless steel version of the S&W Model 29.

Although this turns out to be a Taurus, I actually own a Model 29 "Classic" with a full length ejector shroud.

Very nice looking gun.

Taurus revolvers do have a good reputation, so if you're just looking for a good revolver I'd still try to make a deal.....
I wouldn't pay S&W prices for it though.

Thanks. This one's a keeper. I bought it NIB in about 1996. It has a 5" barrel, which is kind of an unusual length, and I think they only made this version of it for a couple of years. No trigger lock, of course. I'm not given to naming my guns under normal circumstances, but somehow along the way, this one picked up the nickname of "Big Poppa." I'll never sell it.
Edited to add: To the OP, if you can get a price you can live with, Taurus IS a reputable brand, and a solidly made .44 Special pistol with a good stout SD load rivals a .45 ACP in capability. I wouldn't turn down this gun if the price is right if I were you...unless you
really have your heart set on a S&W.

well I was not really in the market for the gun but if I was gonna get a S&W for 250-300 I would have picked it up, I dont think he will go down to a price I would pay for it now. guess it does not hurt to make him an offer though... I mean it is payday
Edit to add, what is it worth being a tauras? 250 to much?
