No, ya'll are talking about two different things. What you are talking about is only stored on the physical device or backup on the computer. The information is only accessible with the device in hand.
What he is talking about is one of the many app's available that will show you in real time where the phone is physically located. That's useful for the teenage daughters. I have a couple.
Correct.
It is a free service for items (Iphones, Ipads) that use OS 4.2

I was only at the watering hole for 10 minutes officer. No way I had that much to drink.
.12? uh uh. No way.
Can I see your phone?
Oh, uh, well, sure.
Got a warrant?

They're just a distraction whilst in pursuit of the larger prize.
It's the stuff you don't know about that gets you.

That's what I figured.

There are a number of "self destruct" type apps that you can get for iPhone/iPad...where you can push one button and it secure wipes the whole device in a minute or two. May look into one for my iPad.

According to this article in the Wall Street Journal, both Google and Apple are receiving all of the data that your phone generates.

This is totaly different than just storing the data on the phone or in a linked computer!

All smart phones track you, (not just Iphones) they have to do that to provide you with certain features. However I do not see the need to record the data.

When I download certain applications to my Droid, it tells me that they will use GPS features re: my location. I just looked, and it appears that I can de-select the options to use wireless networks and/or GPS satellites to track my location, although it warns that these are necessary for apps such as navigation and maps. I can understand that the phone needs to know where I am at if I want help with directions, but I don't see the same level of need / benefit from storing this data, and minimal to no positive from transmitting the data back to Google worldwide.

The devices, sold by a company called Cellebrite, can download text messages, photos, video, and even GPS data from most brands of cell phones. The handheld machines have various interfaces to work with different models and can even bypass security passwords and access some information."
The devices even can access "deleted" data ...

I have never had a cell phone, but I'll show this to my niece. Probably won't be long till the average 15 year old hacker wannnabe stalker builds one. About 20 years ago I saw a video of a person just driving down the road and a guy pointed a device at their car and the phone in the car's ID became the phone hacker's new phone ID on an EEPROM or something.

Both iPhones and Android based phones are doing this.
While the phones are getting location data every x number of seconds, they also are transmitting this information to Apple or Google. Apple and/or Google are then storing the location data for the phone on their servers.
They say they need this data for advertising purposes so they can send you ads based on what they believe your interests are, as established by where you go and, supposedly, what's at that location.
For example, if your phone location is the Irish Pub down the street 3-4 nights per week, you'll get advertising deemed appropriate for people who frequent Irish Pubs, such as dialysis services and/or 12-step program locations....

I have a lot more important things I wouldn't want the wrong people to have than a history of places I've been before. If they really want to find out when I'm at home an when I'm not, there's much easier ways than stealing my computer/phone.

Its only a history of where your PHONE has been.
