In my small town high school where absolutely no incidents had ever happened, they did just that my senior year. It is very inconvenient for students, we had little time between classes and had to go to our lockers between each one for our books, made for a lot of tardies.

I never carried a backpack in school and nobody else in my school did, either. We all went to our lockers after each class and got the book for the next class. Sometimes, if two classes were in the same part of school, we'd carry the books for both classes around until we attended both and could get back to our locker. I never carried a backpack until college.

Now I see kids in elementary school wearing them. I admit it would have made things a bit more convenient, but then asking a girl to carry her backpack when walking home from school (something else kids don't do anymore) doesn't sound as chivalrous as asking to carry her books for her.

I'm not that old, really. But I do find myself wanting to yell at the kids to get off my lawn, lately....

The ignorant fools who built my daughters school about 3 years ago only put in enough lockers for about 1/3d the capacity. So the school in their infinite wisdom decided that no one could use the lockers instead of a: let the senior students use them (enough [abbreviated profanity deleted] r1 grade level) or b: the easy way is to put in more lockers. So spend a little more and get your moneys worth (actually, my money) or let the money spent go to waste. Typical govt decision.

Keep in mind the exact same thing can and does happen in peoples' pockets when they carry an unholstered gun in the same place as other items.

Confession time: I started out with a snubby in an otherwise empty pocket but without a holster. Finally bought a holster thinking it would prevent having a hole in the bottom of the pocket. Now glad I did for the the reason that it is a little safer now. Those of you who are doing what I did before, buy a pocket holster now. You will be glad you did. That doesn't mean you will no longer need to be careful, however (he hastens to add).

I had a discussion the other day with a parent who was on the fence on having a gun in the house or not for fear her kids would get it. After pointing out there are very good ways to prevent that, I asked if she had a pool? No. Have you taught your kids to swim? Of course? Why? To keep them from drowning.... The real problem is "how did the kids get the weapons" and "why did they feel the need to bring them to the school"?
