I voted for the XD based on my personal experience with my XD9 service model and observations of a friend's multiple problems with a Kimber Ultra Carry. The XD goes "bang" every time my friend's Kimber is a "Jam-O-Matic."

I see no significant advantage to the compact 1911 pistols, I can conceal a 5" 1911 as easily as I can conceal a smaller gun the same holds for the XD.

As far as caliber goes - - - 9mm, .40, .45, all will do the job with good ammo and proper shot placement.

For four decades there was only one "real" handgun to me - a 1911 in 45 ACP. My right brain "emotional" side would lean toward the 1911 variety, however my logical left brain has been more dominant lately and that's why I voted for the XD as a carry firearm. I now carry a G19 and do not feel undergunned at all - especially with CB DPX ammo.

1911's are my favorite, but I do own lots of different pistols I like, and will own many more as time rolls along.

They all have a place and use.

If I got a kimber UC II...


I'm looking at the Gaclo sillouhette holster (spelling...but its late). Would the thumb strap go between the cocked hammer and the back of the slide. This would be an added measure of security I think.

ALSO -

Any comments on concealed rigs with a thumb strab vs no thumb strap?


Still debating what to get. A 9mm would be nice.....cheaper ammo.

Still have no idea, im 50/50.

A thought I did have though is that a kimber probably holds value a bit better than an XD, so get the kimber, let the newness wear off, and if I don't absolutely love it, switch to the XD with money to spare.

I personally do not like a thumb strap on any holster, concealed or otherwise, with two exceptions. For a duty rig I think it's necessary, as weapon retention is of critical importance for a uniformed officer on duty. For most non-LEO's, weapon retention is not an issue, unless you are carrying during certain physical activities that may dislodge the handgun. Even then, a proper fitting IWB will make it highly unlikely that the gun will fall out, but an OWB might require some form of retention device like a thumb strap. For example, if I'm hunting and carry my S&W Mod. 57 or 29, it's certainly not going to be in an IWB, so I'll use an OWB with a strap.

I was eyeballing the Galco Concealable belt holster (w/o thumb strap).

Another question is whether or not I'm sure that I want a belt holster. Right now I have a paddle, and I thnk I would enjoy the stability of a belt holster. I plan on purchasing it with a matching galco belt.
