.30-40 Krag? NOW WITH PICS!

Oooh, that is a right pretty rifle.

If you get a chance to shoot it, by all means, do. A rifle that nice deserves to be shot, and the Krag infantry rifles tame an already soft-recoiling cartridge to downright pleasant levels. I'm almost jealous (oh, who am I kidding, I AM jealous!

).

I am wanting to take it out shooting this weekend, if my music travels don't get in the way. I do have a couple of questions that maybe one of you guys could answer for me:

1. There's a little switch on the left side of the rifle, not the safety, but another switch--what does this do? Is this the magazine cutoff? I'm still new to rifles...go easy on me!

2. Kevin, you said to be careful with cleaning etc. If I go and shoot it, Hoppes is an ok cleaner, right? I don't want to get it too gunked up, for sure!!

Using Hoppes is fine.

When I cautioned about chemicals, I was thinking of all the times a friend or coworker has been proud to show the old rifle they "cleaned up"... with paint stripper, steel wool, and sandpaper.

Yes. With the box magazine cut off, you can load one round at a time.

Ok-- I'm just wanting to be as careful as I can with this thing, but I still do want to take it out and shoot it. It's in shooting shape, for sure! Bubba will get nowhere near this rifle, I assure you!!

What kind of oil would you use for the stock? It doesn't looks like it needs too much, just a little here and there, and I know that you guys have your pet oils and such.

Any guesses as to what I should offer to buy this rifle for? I've been poking around on the internet, but the price ranges vary so much that I'm just not sure what I should offer, and I'd like to be fair.

Finally got out to the range this today and had a chance to shoot this beauty!

Fired 10 shots, as it was a little too cold to hang around too long today.

First 5 resting on some sandbags at 50 yds:

Next 5 standing at 50 yds. This gun isn't exactly light!

It's a shooter, for sure. I'm not the best shot, so I'm sure there are many of you out there who could do a lot better. If any of you are in the Lubbock area, let's hit the range!

Sad thing is that I broke the sling when I was trying to take it off to avoid breaking the leather, which was a little worn in one spot. Gotta figure out a way to mend the leather, I guess.

Don't bother trying to repair the sling, that model is available. For that rifle an M 1903 sling would be appropriate, although an M1907 wouldn't be out of line. They are about $50.00 for brand new and vary for used.
