I called the CHL dept. today and they said they received everything June 30, 2011 and are just waiting on my background check to come back. Since I was 18 I have only received 3 speeding tickets and I am 24 now. It seems like everyone has had pretty quick turnaround on their applications and mine is still under review after 6 weeks. The only thing I can think of is that I just finished college in 2009 so I moved around a lot from 2005-2009. Is that what could be holding up the review?

I went ahead and contacted the Governors' office this afternoon and will keep you updated.


6-30-11 All materials Received. Waiting on Background Check.
8-15-11 Still Waiting on Background Check.

Generally they want you to give them at least 60 days to turn it around, and I would advise people to quit pulling the trigger on calling the Govs office, or the office of their reps so quickly. I would hate to wear out our welcome with these people.

When folks all around me are getting their's in 2-3 weeks and I'm seeing no movement after 5, to me, that's a red flag something is wrong.

And I apologize if I'm in the minority, but those reps and govs don't mind calling me at 1800 while I'm eating dinner asking me to vote for them.
So I'm not feeling the guilt, here.

I get that information off of their website where they say to give it 60 days, and up to 180 days if there is something in your past that is going to cause a glitch. No where do they say they will turn it around any quicker. Those 2 week turn-arounds are a very new phenomenon, and that time will change based on the number of people applying at any given time.

Sigh, I guess I will look it up and copy it for you.

Thanks for the C&P. And I guess we have differing interpretations of what "within 60 days" means.

For me, that says if you approach 60 days and have no background issues, then something is wrong.
For me, when I see 30 day trends and I'm on the other side of that, then something is wrong.

When I noted no change in status for 30 days, after confirming that I and outside agencies had fulfilled our obligations, I made inquiries and sure enough ... something was wrong.
Had I waited 61 days and based upon the time spent making those inquiries started the process, the 90 day clock would have run out and I risked losing my application fee.

And I rationalize it two ways ... and sleep very well at night ...

The guys running the state work for me. I pay them every couple of years with my vote.
And two, having to pay $140 to exercise my constitutional right is a slap in the face.

So yes, getting substandard customer service from people I employ and paying for my constitutional rights makes me a little anxious.

Fingers crossed for you that it all works out now. Not to beat a dead horse - but I'm going to just because.... I remember back in the day when 3-4 months was a good turn around time lol.

I know it is hard to laugh about it but someday you will (only because its on the way).

Please keep us updated on the issue.

I remember those days as many around me had gone through that process.
And to be honest, I was prepared for a two-three month wait.

But like I said many times, when I saw 30 day or less turn-around times, it threw up a red flag.

And like anything, people will abuse this avenue. But who is to blame, really?

Its easy to blame me because the process is difficult to fix.

I don't get why everyone is giving you such grief. There was obviously a problem.

You had fingerprints taken. L1 says (and confirms) they were sent. The state says your application is missing fingerprints. That's a problem and not one that requires patience hoping something will magically happen.

Now, if it was stuck in the background check phase or some other spot where it was in a pile on someone's desk, that is a different story. Good for you for doing what you had to do to MAKE someone care. Glad you finally got your plastic!

Now, if only these state workers could be in charge of our healthcare. Wouldn't that be GREAT!

The funny thing is that if I HAD waited, the clock ran out and posted those data points, an equal number of folks would have dog piled telling me I was stupid and should have contacted some one.

I guess I read it as them making every effort to issue within 60 days. It can not be much more clear than that. If they have not issued by day 60, then you should see the red flag. I never said you should not get with DPS to check on progress, I did so after a month of absolutely no update. However, start with the DPS and give them a chance to check on it. There may be a perfectly valid reason, including your background, for this being held up. It might then take up to 180 days. Now you will have someone from the Govs office poking their noses into it.

Like I said, I can't make it much clearer than that. Not trying to beat you about the head on it, I simply think we need to save the big guns for the appropriate time. Right now, they seem to jump in and help. If they start getting call after call, especially when people did not start at the source, they will probably start to handle it differently.

When I called Monday someone contacted me that afternoon saying they would begin working on it. Today I received a call from someone at the DPS saying "The information for my background check had never been sent off and that hopefully it will have a quick turnaround." So if I would have never called I would still be waiting for awhile. So looks like it should be another couple of weeks but at least I know now that it is being reviewed.

Update:

Plastic arrived today.

65 days from Application to Plastic in hand.

34 days of that was used in electronically transfering my fingerprints from L1 to TDPS.
Must be a 3 baud modem.

13 days of that was pony express delivery from Austin to Granbury.
Must use donkeys.
