When I was in college I worked at a carry out in another state. They liked that I carried at work. There was some kind of blue law about being around a lot of cash and being able to carry but I am sure I would have lost. The local police stopped by quite a bit and knew everyone. Twice I had to call them out for problems outside the store. One guy was being chased by a man with a gun. Told him to stay in the store till the cops got there and we got it all worked out. I sure felt better knowing I had my Makarov...that's all I could afford then.

I thought CHL was passed in 1995. Did it not go into effect until 1997?

My original plastic was issued in 1996.

I could certainly be off on the date. My chl instructor, while a really nice guy whom I do like quite a lot, did tell us to some 'questionable' information.

At about that time I had my chk in Alabama. I went to the local sheriff's office, filled out a one page form and gave them a check for $50.

Pretty sure that's not the case now.

There's a video of an amazing speach by a Texas Representative who was also present at the Luby's massacre. She lost both her parents, was an amazing proponent for the concealed carry bill. Probably the most persuasive anti-gun control speach i've ever heard. She gives you a good idea of what it was like pre-chl. (She had her revolver in the glovebox during the shooting because she was afraid of breaking the law by carrying in her purse.)

My aforementioned CHL instructor showed that video in class, pretty compelling.

prior to licensure, I legally carried concealed at my office I was in charge of, and at my home.

In the 1970s, while in the car and walking to work on Main or Westheimer or Telephone Road in Houston, I open carried a barely legal sized double barrel 12 ga. (broke open so non-threatening) The police would waive, only once did one stop and ask if it was legal sized, I jokingly said it is today, metal expands when hot, I have a tape measure if you want to check. We both laughed, he said no; he made sure I had 2 shells in the chambers in case I needed to flip it closed, and went on his way

Back to the OP. When I was in High School, we ALL carried long guns in the car. The parking lot was rife with pickups and their gun racks. I had a VW and carried my plinking rifle and a snake charmer. We always carried Buck's or Gerber's.

Once when I was seventeen (long hair and beard), a breeze caught my VW on 121 and I wavered. I was on my way home after doing some late night work for a friend. A DPS officer trawling for drunks turned around and lit me up. He asked for my registration and as I reached for it I remembered the pistol in the glove box. I said, "Uh, there's a pistol in there and my paperwork is under it." He took one step back, placed his hand on the butt of his gun and said, "Well, come out with just the paperwork and we'll be fine." I did, he told me he was looking for drunks which obviously I wasn't, he wrote me a warning for license plate light or something and sent me on my way.

When I came back from the army, I was biking quite a bit and had two instances where I was jumped by a couple of redneck types. One I handled and one was defused when a couple of other bikers saw what was happening and pulled in behind me. I decided I would start carrying and actually called DPS legal on the defenses to prosecution. Here is what they told me.

• There is no difference between concealed, unconcealed, loaded or unloaded.
  They (DPS) prefer they be out of sight.
  "Traveling" is undefined, a bed roll on your bike or a overnight bag in your car may help.

I always carried in my car and most of the time on the bike. I only got spotted once by a sheriff down in Burnett when my wife and I were traveling through. We were at a restaurant and as I tried to get out of my leather he spotted it, at least that is what his expression said. He did not approach us or anything.

From then on, since I worked in a bad area of Dallas, I always carried in the car and if I had to stop on the way home, would conceal it on my body.
