I don't know if this story is true but it makes the point.

Remember Western Union when they actually sent a messenger with a telegram?

Remember when they would spell the punctuation instead of simply putting the punctuation mark?

They way I heard it was that it came about because they got sued at the turn of the century (yeah, the last one)

for this sentence:

"No price too high."

But what the sender meant was:

"No. Price too high."
