I'd still say a good pellet gun was in order. Quiet, and effective. (Financials aside)

This is TX baby go get a 10/22 and a can for it or at least a .22 upper/kit for your AR-15 and can it.

My brother has a Winchester 74 with a long barrel - in .22 Short. It's the quietest firearm I've ever been around. Even with standard velocity ammunition, it's darn quiet. I'm not sure how well it functions with the specifically-designated subsonic ammo, but even a manually-operated repeater that quiet could be useful.

I like pellet guns and have a few stout versions. While the FPS is there, the mass ain't, so the energy delivered to the varmint is not enough unless you get a very accurate head-shot.
Also, airguns take a different skillset. They are very hold-sensitive, and also ammo-sensitive.
My choice would be a long-barrel (22" - 24") bolt gun shooting .22 shorts or Aquila SSS. Both will make about the same noise as a pellet gun, are more accurate, and deliver a lot more mass to the problem area. My 60-year old Stevens bolt-action will group 1" at 25 yards with SSS all day long.

You've beaten me into submission. I would have to agree on all counts and suggest the shorts as well.
Still, a good pellet gun and a lot of pellets make for a fun afternoon in the backyard.

Absolutely!I just bought a Walther model 94 lever-action CO2 rifle.
Great on targets and cans, not enough for varmints larger than hornets

I ran into this problem with grackels. .410 is louder than a .22 but less than a .12 gauge for sure. That's what I started out with. Then I bought a Gamo suppressed pellet gun but it is louder than advertised. Noise will get you in trouble. My question is, won't a skunk still spray when it is shot?

Yes they still spray! I have now killed two. Just went outside to bait my new trap and another one was in the yard! All I had on me was a hand full of dog food! My new plan is to trap them, shoot em' during the day with pellet gun or .22.

This problem would go away if we would get some damn rain!

Since I live in the city limits I would just use a pellet gun
As with ANY engagement the right gun with the right ammo and the correct shot placement will take care of most pests ...
The only noise you have to worry about is the ricochet off what you hit when you miss the soft targets...
Ive been tempted to start harvesting some of the rabbits that are in the neighborhood - cheap lean meat

From other forums discussions on skunks, I gather they will not spray if it is a perfect brain shot -- immediate CNS kill.

Also, I've heard of people using cages with a very low roof. If the skunk cannot raise its tail, apparently it cannot spray.

Try one of these once in a while as punctuation: ".", followed by an upper case letter...........as in:

Posting from your cellphone this morning?

Sorry. It's Saturday morning, the pain pill is starting to kick in, and I'm feeling a bit like a cheeky monkey.

OK......... I have to know:

1) How do the hornets react to being shot at if you miss?

2) How fast can you run?
