Just do it. Wait, that sounds like a Nike commercial.

Just show it. Wait, that sound like a felony.

I would give the cop both my DL and CHL. If you do not give him your CHL, even though you are not carrying, he is going to get a little exercised when it pops up on his screen. Whether or not he understands that you did not have to show it to him, he may have experienced a slight mental gear shift in the meantime.

...there is no penalty in the law, but an officer who knows you're predisposed to break the law just because the penalty has been removed is more likely to write you a ticket or "roust" you a bit...instead of identifying you as a good citizen who may have just made a boo-boo and giving you a warning...since you have to get your wallet out anyways, I see it as natural and positive to give it to him...carrying or not...

Driving a commercial vehicle affords me the glorious opportunity to speak with the States finest, at random, even when I haven't committed a traffic violation. Vehicle inspection stations. Although not required by law to present CHL, most of the Troopers don't understand/know what the current statutes are. So I always hand it over and let them know if I am armed or not. I've done it both ways, always following the law, and letting them have it just always works better.

Except those of us who are currently attending "institutes of higher learning"...and aren't authorized to carry at those locations. Mostly because of certain politicians in this state who are politically weak-kneed...AND a certain individual from another state sticking his nose in Texas' business where it didn't belong. I hate having gone through the class (though it was a good one), spent the money on the class and fees...purchased the proper gear, etc...just to be told, "No, no, we'd rather make sure our college campuses are free-fire zones for criminals and nutjobs"...Rant complied with...Sorry, but that is a VERY sore point for me.

Late responding, but.....
punkndisorderly wrote:Really doesn't matter. If you aren't carrying, you don't need to show it. In my experience, if you're not carrying and you show it anyway, they will ask where the gun is or if you are carrying. When you reply that you're not carrying, they'll hand you back the card and tell you they don't need it.

If you don't hand the card, they'll go back to their car to run the license, the CHL flag will pop up on the screen, they will ask you if you're carrying, and you say you're not.

Warning tickets are like bigfoot, aliens, and ghosts. I've met plenty of people who have seen them, but I've never experienced one despite my sunny disposition, good looks, and CHL. For some reason, I always get the [abbreviated profanity deleted.] cop that gets a kick out of being a jerk that pulls me over. :mad5 On the up side, the ticket's are usually dismissed because they've been jerks to enough other people they're fired by the time it comes to court. :smash:
Well that begs the question.... Is your screen name a true descriptive or merely a joke? When you start with the premise that a cop is a sadistic "[abbreviated profanity deleted.]" just because he wrote you a ticket, instead of just a police officer doing his job, you automatically have freighted the situation with attitude. I have yet to talk to an "[abbreviated profanity deleted.]" cop (as you put it) when stopped, and I haven't been ticketed for a moving violation in 12 years. I haven't been stopped for a moving violation in 12 years. And in the 12 years prior to that, I had several cops issue me warnings instead of tickets—including when I was plain as day speeding on a motorcycle. On the other hand, I've never been intellectually dishonest enough to refuse to acknowledge that I was, in fact, violating the law when I got stopped. I have found that cops appreciate honesty, and some times they will cut you some slack if you're big enough to admit that you were in the wrong, that you're sorry, and that you'll try to be more careful going forward.

The other thing that occurs to me is that your use of the word "always" is a large exaggeration. How many times exactly have you been to court over a ticket where the cop had been fire for inappropriate behavior?

Just my 2¢....

The solution is to vote against every incumbent who did't vote for campus carry.

Don't let the ricardoless wonders in the house get away with killing it in the smoky back room of the calendars committee and then lying about being pro gun. Talk is cheap. We shouldn't reward politicians who publicly claim support for campus carriy when their actions behind the scenes do not live up to their hype.

There are maybe two dozen politicians in Austin who deserve my vote. The rest won't get it, no matter if they"re running for reelection or a higher office. Let them ask the new English and Californicators for their votes.

He admitted writing tickets to non-carrying CHL holders he would have otherwise given warnings to just because he found out about the CHL from dispatch instead of the holder. Now that he's aware that the law only requires showing if carrying, he still recommends showing so the LEO isn't surprised to find out about the CHL when he runs your license.
That part of the law has not changed. It's never been required to display the CHL license if you have no firearm on or about your person. The only change to the display requirement was the removal of the penalty if you fail to provide the license when asked while you ARE carrying.

Neither New Jersey nor New York are in New England.

Where do you think the names come from? If (York, Yorkshire, Duke of York) is English than New York is New English. It makes perfect sense.

Seems to me it's easier to explain why you are not carrying than why you failed to advise you were a CHL holder. Nobody likes surprises...
Though you should always be carrying....
There is no failure here, only varied degrees of success!!

If I'm NOT carrying a handgun and I get pull over by a police officer, should I show him my CHL? Is it mandatory to have the CHL with me at all times, even if I don't have a handgun on me?
Thanks! God Bless!
Why wouldn't you have a handgun? You're in your car so it's not like clothing choices matter.
