One thing I would recommend is to start looking for a police job now, while he is int he academy. In most cases, the hiring process for a department is three months long (can be done quicker and can take a lot longer), they need time to do a background check and all.

That's a good idea. I'm going to give him that recommendation. I know he has talked about applying before he gets out of the academy. Not sure if he's planning on waiting till it gets closer or what.

His thoughts about going into the academy and paying for it on his own was he would be more marketable and they wouldn't have to pay for him to go through it. Hopefully even if he goes to a major city/county/state agency is that if he already has his TCLEOSE they won't send him through their own academy, they will just put him with a FTO.

Be prepared for another academy if he does go this way. When I went through SAPD's academy, I had all sorts of former officers, including state troopers and a chief from one of the small town's in my academy class. I know DPS's attitude was the same way last time I talked with them. The departments that can afford it make people go through their training to be sure everyone does things their way. It is a liability question on failure to train if things go wrong.

"Fire School" was pretty much the same for me 30+ years ago. Had to repeat everything just to meet department requirements. Gained 20 lbs during that six weeks of boring classroom inactivity.
