I think the idea was that there is no 100% effective cartridge, at least that can be carried in a handgun.
I would agree, it is all about hitting a vital area no matter the caliber. Of course, the large the round the better the chance to hit one of those areas. I remember reading (I cannot remember where) about someone shot in the heart with a large caliber round and living. Any gun is better than no gun so practice with what you carry and get good at using it.
