thanks i went to basspro last night and they had a guy who seemed to know a lot about the scopes but i have no idea what to get.seems very overwhelming.

What about base and rings? Should i get the picatiny or dovetail mount?

I run a Warne one piece base and Burris XTR rings on both of my SPS Tacticals. The base and rings are rock solid. I have put nearly 1,000 rounds through the .223 and have not had to re-zero it. Took it on an elk hunt in NM this past October and my wife and I were poppin' prairie dogs out to 400 yards with it. On the .308 I haven't shot near as many rounds (>200) but have not had any issues with it either.

I don't think the $800 Trijicon is overkill at all for that rifle. I actually think its just right b/c I love Trijicon products and can not rave about them enough. Realistically though I would spend a solid $500 or so on some optics and a quality mount for sure to achieve desired results from a rifle like that. Did you have to pay retail for it?

I looked at the trijicon i hate the sight inside it.

Don't discount Trijicon b/c of the reticle. There are usually a few different styles to choose from in different colors as well. For a 1-4x power accupoint I would go with the green triangle on the post, for a 3-9x or anything higher in the mil-dot cross hair with green dot.

I personally like the green reticle color the most and is said to be the most pleasing and natural to the human eye to pick up on.

yea i like green but i think 900 is a little too expensive.

I would highly recommend the Leupold, I own 4 and have never had an issue with any of them. All their gold ring scopes come with full lifetime warranties and I've never heard of anyone having a problem getting warranty work (I've never personally met someone who actually needed work on a leupold, but I'm sure they are out there). My first scope was a vari-X II (23+ years and counting) and its still mounted on the same rifle (Remington 700 ADL) and was used this past deer season, successfully I might add.

Just standard mount and rings should be fine. A picatinny would work, but I've always used that for quick/multiple attachments on something like an AR platform. All of my non AR hunting rifles (Bolt and SA) have standard 2 piece leupold base and 1" rings with just the scope, nothing else (no backup iron sights, etc).

I don't own any, but my understanding of dovetails is that they are more expensive and normally reserved for higher caliber rifles with a lot of kick. That being said, there is nothing wrong with them, it may just be overkill for your set up.

Agreed. Won't be disappointed with Leupold. It's been the standard for scopes in my world for a long time. Get a 1 or 2 piece set of Leupold rings that fit your rifle and you are ready to go.

I bought leupold vx-3 was around 600.

Now we'll expect a range report!

ill prolly go shoot it this weekend. I hope it does what I want I sure spent enough money on it.lol

I'm sure it will perform great. What type(brand, bullet weight, bullet type) of ammo are you going to take to the range? How much do you intend to shoot it and are you concerned about any break in process or are you just going to go shoot and clean it when your done?
