That's the goverment's fault too. If everbody with a machine shop could crank out all they could sell they would be $20 for cheap ones, MAYBE $200 for the good ones.

Makers have to get a whole new level of ATF license and pay a big tax, plus they have to keep good records and let ATF look at them whenever they want. Lotta overhead, makes the product cost more.
Also the stamp limits the number of people who would buy them. making them a specialty item, that isn't produced in volumes
Oh, I realize those things, but it doesn't change the reality of it. I've only got so much gun budget. I can buy:
  1. guns
  2. ammo
  3. loading components
  4. accessories (holsters, optics, etc.)
  5. suppressors
However, I can't buy all of the above, all at one time. So far, the cheapest supressor I've seen online retails for about $575.00. My guess is that there are usually no breaks on the MSRP because they are a low volume product. So, assuming that I paid $575 + the $200 tax stamp, that would come to $775 per gun.....and I own a lot of guns. And then there is the cost of modifying the particular gun to accept the can by either turning down and threading the barrel, or by purchasing a flash hider with a quick-mount feature that will accept the can......figure at least $150/firearm........and now we are somwhere between $900-$1,000 to put a can on each weapon. That pretty much eliminates the idea of adapting most of my guns to accept a can. So, I would have to pick and choose. So if I added cans to my Ruger 22/45, my M&P45, one of my AR carbines, my M1A, and my Remington 700, that's about a $5,000 investment that I simply can't afford.

Also, most of these things seem to weigh at least a pound, some more than that. That is a lot of weight to stick out at the end of a long barrel on an already heavy rifle. That's something to think about...

So I think what I'm going to do down the road is build another light carbine that replicates the one I built for my wife a few months ago, and choose a flash hider for it that will accept the can I want to buy. I already own a Bushmaster 24" Varminter that I almost never shoot. It has a wonderful two stage match trigger. I may repurpose it and mate a different barrel to the upper, discard the PRS stock for a light collapsible stock, and turn that one into the carbine I'm seeing in my head........with a suppressor mounted on it.

We'll see....

TAM, my answer for some of the expense is a YHM 762QD. It is a quick detach 30 cal suppressor that has QD brakes for anything from 5.56/.223 to 7.62/.308. These brakes run about $65 and they make them for common EBRs (ARs, AKs, M1s) as well as common thread patterns for rifles that have threaded barrels. Also a 22 can could be had for <$300.

A glimmer of hope on the elimination of the CLEO requirement.....Which forces us Harris County folks to set up a trust...

I would love to have a suppressor but the cost is hard to swallow.

its crazy that perception of danger based on movies is what is driving legislation ..

OT - I always enjoy seeing people on shooting shows at the range or eslewhere on TV with the foam cylinder ear plugs dangling from their ears.
If you can see more than half of it - its not inserted correctly. Its worthless or nearly - But they are compliant ...
Of course I prefer to double up - plugs and muffs - especially at indoor ranges

A) What does a trust cost?

B) My showed my son that YHM 762QD, and he raised an issue....how effective can a suppressor be on a 5.56 rifle when the exit hole is large enough to let a 7.62 bullet pass through?

I had mine drawn up for $450, the Quicken Will Maker version I did myself looks the same except it cost me $29. The reason I had the lawyer draw one up is because he will also provide legal guidance and paperwork assistance on the NFA stuff for the original $450 that the trust cost.
The videos I have seen of the. 30 cal can on a 5.56 seem impressive, especially on a bolt gun. The reviews I have read seem to reflect that it is quite effective on the 5.56 because of the larger volume of the 762QD. The titanium version of the 762QD is only 15oz and is rated for any .30 cal including. 300 Ultra Mag. I will be putting in an order for one sometime this month hopefully. :evil2:

If you don't have an immediate need for a suppressor you may hold off on forming a trust. There is a strong possibility that the requirement for the Chief Law Enforcement Officer sign off requirement for NFA weapons is going away. I have heard from reliable sources that it has been signed off on at the DOJ and they are in the process of coming up with new forms. Now, if they will just classify suppressors as an AOW with a $5.00 transfer tax.

I would probably go the trust route even if the CLEO in Harris County would sign. I have my wife and dad on the trust, so all three of us can make purchases through the trust and have controll of the items. Otherwise if my wife wanted to buy me an SBR as a gift, and had the paper work done in her name, I wouldn't be able to take it out and play unless she was around. Also, I can add an additional trustee (future children) and when I am gone, they get the NFA items in the trust without having to pay $200 per item to transfer them.
