I've actually considered getting another state's CHL simply to cut my future costs.
I would still, however, take the TX class as well, just to stay current on our own changing laws.
I haven't done it since A) my current CHL is still good for awhile and B) I don't have enough information right now to know whether or not its a good idea.
ETA: Although my dad has a TX CHL, he has a New Hamshire one that he paid $20 for. He applied through the mail. No class.

Thanks for the opinion of a peace officer on this issue, TEX. I hope that all LEOs would react this way (except for the Brad Pitt thing).

I keep my Utah license in my vehicle so that in the odd chance I've taken off for a drive without my wallet, I at least won't be without a license for my firearm. When I travel to Washington State, the license will go with me...

One thing I have suggested to the CHL Instructors I know, is that they allow people to audit their classes for a substantially reduced fee. No photos, fingerprints, paperwork or range time... just instruction in conflict resolution and the law, the same as the CHL students are getting.

This would be good for people who "travel" exclusively (unlicensed vehicle carry), those who are wondering if CHL is right for them, out-of-stater visitors, and new movers (or even Texas residents) who have out-of-state licenses. It's even good for people who just keep a gun at home.

That's a pretty good idea. For me, I don't think I'd take the class since I can find the same legal information on the Internet if I spend some time researching.

Texas has signed reciprocal agreements with Florida and Tennessee, allowing citizens with concealed handgun licenses issued by Florida or Tennessee to legally carry concealed handguns in Texas, and vice versa.

Col. Thomas A. Davis Jr., director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, signed the reciprocity agreements with the State of Florida and the State of Tennessee through which their licensees can visit Texas with their concealed handguns.

Also from the agreement between Utah and Texas:

WHEREAS, the State of Texas is authorized to recognize the validity of a nonresident concealed handgun license if the Texas Attorney General determines that a background check of each applicant for a license issued by the other state is conducted by state or local authorities, or agent thereof, before the license is issued to determine the applicants' eligibility to possess a firearm under the Federal Gun Control Act...

Both of these indicate that the State of Texas does not care where the handgun license is from as long as the state has one or two-way reciprocity with Texas. All the really care about is the background check, which is more or less the same with all of these states.

I've never seen any sort of law that kept Texas residents from getting out-of-state permits and if there was, I should have heard about it by now.

I had a LA permit, but when I moved back home to the Houston area I got a UT permit to save time and money over the TX permit. I've been pulled over once while carrying in a tiny SW Houston suburb, and handed the officer my driver's license and UT CFP at the same time. She asked if I was armed and I told her it was on the floor beside me (in my full sized van). She asked me to step to the rear while she wrote the ticket, at that was it. The UT permit has my TX address on it to match my TX driver's license, so she evidently had no problem.
I won't discuss my expired inspection sticker though.

JK, it is in the glove compartment just in case, even though BCI says 8 months.. Sheesh....

How about just paying that defaulted student loan and show us that the education was worth the money... why cheat and steal from those of us who paid our bills and use our education?

And whats funny...When we finally get them, they'll go right in the safe...We won't carry them around in our current wallets or purses...

If for some silly reason we lose our ID's, we can break open the safe and keep right on a trucking...Till the replacement Texas CHL's come in...

There are a whole bunch of different reasons that people might want the Utah CFP.

Since you related to us that your wallet was recently stolen, with your CHL in it, I am surprised you didn't see the value in that.

Either way, let's try not to assume the worst about others.

Just found this site...I was wondering about this Utah licence also... What are the drawbacks???
