BTW, with four writhing bodies would you be confident that you could safely execute a shot without hitting an unintended person?
I would get away from that mess ASAP. They placed their bets and are taking their chances. If I heard later that they got shot my reaction would be "phew...glad I didn't stick around for that".

Costco and Sam's are membership club sales outlets and you agree to their rules. WalMart and others have no such agreemants with the purchaser. It's a contract that is completed when they accept consideration (payment) for the merchandise they offered for sale. Done deal. Think about someone stopping you, asking you for your receipt walking out of a restuarant after you've paid. There are larger issues in the world to deal with, but I just find it irksome and refuse to comply most times, especially when I have waited in line to pay because they don't have enough checkouts and they have one person checking receipts creating another line. I have never been approached or questioned once I decline at WalMart but I have had conversations with the personnel at Fry's, though I don't show my receipt. I comply at Costco and Sam's.
As for getting involved with loss prevention guys tusseling with a shoplifter No... unless it was obviuos they were in mortal danger from the perp.

Walmart checks receipts here, at least at the one near the border in Chula Vista. I was in there awhile back and exited past the gal doing the checking. She runs after me, hollering, "amigo, amigo!" To tell the truth I was much more offended by the language than having the receipt looked at. I told her, "Speak English! This is the US."
I don't blame them for checking. Shoplifting and such crime are so widespread here these days they will pick your bones before you can say "Caramba!"
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.
...Costco really glances over the buggy and the list...no problem...and it is agreed that we follow their rules and procedures...
...at Sams, we get a faraway look at the list...a poke with the highlighter, and they seldom even look at the basket...if they'd really DO it, it wouldn't be annoying...I often push the buggy for an old man and he walks a ways ahead and they take his slip and mark it...when I get there several steps later, they hold out their hand for my slip and I just walk by...they checked nothing...
...any open non-member store...I won't stop...especially Wal-Mart...they're sporadic about "checking" and have no legal right to stop you once you pass the register, unless they've seen you secrete items on your person...and if they detain me for that...it'll cost 'em...I heard the old man left 'em with plenty of money...
I don't shop at Sam's or Costco because I don't like flashing ID to get in, then reviewing receipt to get out. Their prices aren't that great. At Wal-Mart, if they ask me to show my receipt I just say, "No thanks."
As to the OP, it sounds like they are just itching for an excuse to draw their weapon. If the staff are in no immediate mortal danger, then it's none of your business. Even if the shoplifter were to produce a weapon, I would still stay out of it. It's up to the "security" to decide if it's worth it to try and detain that person. Whatever happens is on them.
...to be fair to the OP...he's not itchin', he's askin'...and his question was directed to IF the Wal-Mart staff ARE put in mortal danger by the "shoplifter's" pulling a gun...

Costco & Sam's Club checking receipts is far different than Walmart or Fry's Electronics doing so. It is part of the club rules (which all members have agreed to) to allow them to check the receipt & the items in your cart. If you don't like it, you can cancel your membership. Walmart & Fry's, OTOH, are not shopping clubs and have no right to search my bags or check my receipt without my content. And I assure you, they won't get it.

By the same token, if you know the receipts are being checked at a given store, you have the right not to shop there, the same as if they banned CHLs. A purist might insist that they post a sign, but knowledge is knowledge, however gained. If you shop there anyway, knowing receipts are checked and get into a hissy over it, the problem is you. If checking receipts causes loss of business, the store management will eventually figure it out and change their ways, or not.

I don't see how this can be called itching to use a weapon
This is what I posted
"I stood on the side lines and stayed out of it
as the thief was dragged into a security office by force."
The person that they were going after was obviousley a thief since merchandise fell out of his coat
The store had a right to stop him they lose a lot of $$$ to shop lifters this raises prices for all of us

I was far enough away not to get involved
I wanted to see what they were going to do with him
There were 3 guards and one thief they were well able to handle it
I never said anyrthing about my providing security
I just watched security drag him off
There were other spectators and they did not get involved either

The alledged thief's friends were photographing the spectators with their stolen cell phones and noting which vehicles they left in.
Guess who's coming to dinner?

...I'm not the kind to boycott my way out of places to shop...I just won't play their game...no hissy...no comply, either...nobody really believes WalMart would miss our business if 100,000 of us quit going there...if THEY have a hissy...the problem is THEM...

IOW, you're a free American citizen who can't be told what to do or be bothered with anyone else's rules. You have rights, and ain't nobody going to infringe upon them.
