May I have your permission to steal this writeup? It's one of those brilliantly simple ways to articulate that which is not always easy to explain to someone! I'd like to use it in my classes....
Hey, I got it from Herb, dunno where got it from, or if he cane up with it on his own. Anyway, be my guest. Class homework assignment is for each student to consciously scan one-hundred people during the following week, to develop the habit.

BTW, the Hats/Eyes, Shirt/Shoes, Hats/Tats thing is just one tool, a way to force yourself to actually pay attention to in individual. It is not the end of "awareness" or "being alert," nor is it "profiling" -- which contrary to platitude, is not a bad thing, is performed by human nature, and like any other tool can be used well or poorly.

This was originally prepared for the 2010 Texas CHL Forum Day at PSC, and is a class I still teach. It will be available online for a limited time.
Thanks for posting that. Great reading. Is there any planned presentation of this course in the future? I'd really like to attend it.

Skiprr,

Thanks for that! Got it, downloaded it. Will print it out and read it after I get some more printer paper.

Don't know if this will resonate with others - but I'm finding that the weight of the gun at my hip is an excellent reminder that I need to be more aware.

Couple of observations, I've noticed that if I'm approaching a wall or fence where someone might be behind it and could step out in front of me - I swerve away from it to increase any closing distance. Also - just tucking my shirt in and checking it in the mirror before going out of the door makes me a lot more cautious about what might be on the other side.

Also - I'd like to say thanks for all the excellent advice I've had from people hereabouts - I honestly believe this forum (and others like it) make carrying a safer prospect for everyone involved.

No sales pitch: you can't buy it. It simply will be removed from the Web in a few weeks.
