Actually, I think he had the one possible good excuse for it at the time. He was trying to save more lives. Cops are notoriously conservative (in the sense of resisting change). As a general rule, they believe that when your number is up, there is nothing you can do. So a lot of cops would not buy the vest or would not wear it because they did not believe that it would do any good.

Davis would shoot himself just to convince cops that the vests really could save their lives.

There is a man who shoots stuff just to see what happens and posts pictures...he runs a site called "Box O' Truth". In one test, he put old vests in front of a box with a layer of modeling clay because he stated that the vests can be easily penetrated if they are just hanging with open air behind them. The modeling clay also recorded the results of the ENERGY deposited by each caliber/round. I would say, based upon the pictures I saw on "Box O' Truth", that the man in the video posted here is a complete MORON. Even if he knew that the vest would would keep the round from penetrating his body, he had no way of knowing how much trauma would be generated by that round. As we were discussing in another thread, the human body can take a LOT of punishment...or one wrong thing can kill you. And you have no way of knowing which until it happens.

Exactly, there are plenty of ways to test and demonstrate the vests safely. Wearing them isn't one of them.

It should also be pointed out that severe vest backface deformation occurs when a bullet is stopped by flexible body armor. A lot of energy is transferred to and dissipated in the body of the wearer, resulting in blunt trauma - sort of like getting jabbed real hard by a wooden dowel. This injury can be severe and even fatal in some cases, and is the source of the obvious pain the star of the video experienced on camera.

This video shows a side view of a vest backed by ballistic gelatin. Even with a 9mm round, the deformation is very significant. The amount of deformation depends on the round and the vest construction, but it always occurs with a soft vest unless the vest also contains hard plate armor at the point of impact.
