Bearing in mind that my main experience in using rice has been in a "rice bag" heated in the microwave and then applied to sore muscles. And heated, dry rice, just smells funky. Yeah, rice is a organic desiccant. So is salt. There are a lot of things that can be used as a drying agent, but some just work better than others. Here is some pretty good info on different desiccants. http://huntingen.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You would have to take a LOT of pills and vitamins for a LONG time to have enough of those dinky desiccant packets to keep a gun safe dry.
