Re: Gingrich playing spoiler to Santorum?
Yes, you want a 'real conservative' candidate to vote for. Great. You do that. Unfortunately a 'real conservative' candidate has as much chance of winning as a 'real liberal' candidate does.
Re: Gingrich playing spoiler to Santorum?
If by "real liberal" you mean "real socialist" than one has already won. Granted he had to lie/cover up his beliefs to do it, but hey...gdanaher wrote:Yes, you want a 'real conservative' candidate to vote for. Great. You do that. If nothing else, we've proven that the voting public is dumb enough to vote for a cool slogan like "change" without bothering to find out what the candidate actually believes in.

Re: Gingrich playing spoiler to Santorum?
I wouldn't be so quick to label the voting public "dumb." The 2008 election was a reaction to a disastrous double-term Bush presidency, and anybody with a "D" as their party affiliation would have won. If you had put a "D" on a lump of coal, today we would have president Lump Of Coal. Republicans are good at destroying their own brand in the minds of the larger American populace to the point where when you mention the "R" word people will reflexively recoil. If Republicans are to have a chance of winning over the majority of Americans again, this has to change.
Re: Gingrich playing spoiler to Santorum?
Then you haven't interacted much with the voting public.matriculated wrote:I wouldn't be so quick to label the voting public "dumb."

I've got some errands to run, but I'll try to lay down my thoughts a little clearer on my return.

Alright, I'm back.
Yes, I would indeed argue that a good percentage of the voting population is "Dumb". To elaborate more clearly, I don't mean that they are uneducated, or unintelligent. Most people simply don't pay enough attention to politics to make an informed decision. This political ignorance I crassly described as "dumb".
There was a man in my hometown who ran for constable (or dog catcher, or some other county position that hadn't been filled or used in years). He ran as a Republican, and promised to not take a paycheck, since he had no actual duties. Guess who took a paycheck.
Then the next election, most people voted straight ticket Republican, so the lying tax money collecting thief got to keep his cushy "job". Dumb!
Then there's this lovely Obama voter:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P36x8rTb3jI. Dumb!
Or this group of people who supported McCains platform under the guise of it being Obamas platform.
WARNING: At least one curse word heard in this clip. (It is from the Howard Stern show)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqAiarOhC2U Dumb!
And I'm going to end with one of my favorite people to quote, because he's so very quotable:
"The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.” -- Winston Churchill

I disagree. The main stream media are the ones that spin anything that a republican does into something negative. Republicans can't even BUY good press any more. They (the MSM) will continually carry the democrat party line without question even when the questions should be obvious. The "Fast and Furious" gun running operation is a recent example. If this had been a republican operation we would be hearing/seeing it every day, all day long. The only place that mentions it is on line gun forums and the American Rifleman etc. The main stream media are shills for the democrats.matriculated wrote: Republicans are good at destroying their own brand in the minds of the larger American populace to the point where when you mention the "R" word people will reflexively recoil. Not entirely true, but it is all opinion. I listen to a lot of talk radio and I'm sitting here and trying to think of anyone on the radio would be viewed as 'liberal.' Rush certainly isn't. nor Glenn. I'm not listening to sat radio so perhaps I am missing them there, but can anyone think of a liberal radio host?2farnorth wrote: The main stream media are the ones that spin anything that a republican does into something negative. If the Republicans want to have positive media coverage, they really need to be a little introspective and change their approach to a few things. These folks keep shooting themselves in the foot. No abortions, ok, but work out something for women's other health issues, or pay through the nose later. If they don't like public education, figure out how to do it better, cheaper. I'd say they need to do the math, but perhaps they lack the ability.
Re: Gingrich playing spoiler to Santorum?
Most people don't consider talk radio "main stream media". That would be newspapers, broadcast TV shows on ABC, CBS, Meet the Press, and the like.gdanaher wrote:Not entirely true, but it is all opinion. The talk radio folks would differ with you. They sell a lot of advertising until the show hosts go too far. What I'm trying to get to is this: The general media, be it radio, television, or print, is always trying to gain audience, and that is accomplished by reporting those juicy tidbits that gains attention. The Democrats have managed to be rather boring of late. Why, even Joe Biden has been able to be muzzled, and the clips of him before the 2008 election are now old and out of style. Not so with the Republicans. They did it again today. They just put the sound bite out there and it gets reported. Hardly anything else needs to be said--just play back the film of the guy flapping his gums and that's all that needs to be said. The liberal media crud is just that--if the Repubs would just stop forcing those size 12's down their throat every time a camera is rolling, you might be griping about the conservative media instead.74novaman wrote:Most people don't consider talk radio "main stream media". Re: Gingrich playing spoiler to Santorum?
Yesterday Eric Fehrnstrom, Romney's oldest and closest aide, called his candidate an "Etch-a-Sketch," referring to Romney's ability to just wipe his slate clean for the general election and veer back to the center after he clinches the primary. So here's Romney's closest and most trusted aide, openly telling conservatives that Romney will abandon them, even before he reaches the White House. After consulting my crystal ball, I can report that Republicans will nominate Romney, he will lose, and then Republicans will turn on him and say he lost because he wasn't conservative enough. So here's an idea: Let's nominate a conservative. Santorum is far from perfect, but he's not a wishy-washy liberal Republican pretending to be conservative just long enough to get the nomination. I just don't see how Romney has any chance of winning. I mean, have you seen video of him interacting - excuse me, attempting to interact - with actual live human beings? It's like he's never had a normal conversation with a normal everyday person in his life. One has to wonder if he eats food for breakfast, or if upon awakening he just squirts some WD-40 on all the moving parts...
