Yeah, but when the Mexican navy attacked and blew up the French ship carrying the sandwich condiments, 'Sink-o de Mayo' became a national holiday!!recaffeination wrote:It's a better excuse for a holiday than tomorrow's celebration of another French military defeat.

Or something I guess. The ironic thing is that in grade school (talking 50s here) the advanced students in the class were "allowed" to investigate the other base numbering systems. I was a little less than advanced, so I was left out. Having maintained contact with a lot of old friends from those days, I have come to the conclusion that of the 15 or so students in the class who studied binary, octal and hex, not one ever used it in their lives or careers, but I did, up to and including teaching how to, manually, do a CRC, just to understand how THAT works.Keith B wrote:So, does that make you an 'Uber-Nerd' Jim?jimlongley wrote:Get it? You'll love this then: One of my favorite interview questions when I worked at Microsoft was two write a random number on the whiteboard, then ask the interviewee to show me how to display that number in negative base 2.jimlongley wrote: Or something I guess. It was fun watching their fuses pop and double check that I wanted it expressed in a _negative_ base

My questions were often easier than the "hard" ones given to people applying to be software engineers at Microsoft. The interviews there are rather notorious.jimlongley wrote:That's just pure mean.OldCannon wrote: You'll love this then: One of my favorite interview questions when I worked at Microsoft was two write a random number on the whiteboard, then ask the interviewee to show me how to display that number in negative base 2.

Yeah, one job interview I had years ago, I was asked to identify several pieces of SNA equipment. I pulled my cheat sheet out of my pocket, and got dinged for it. Hey, who has all SNA equipment IDs memorized? I could read both EBCDIC and ASCII and used to use a BOP protocol analyzer to shoot troubles on an SNA network, that and my cheat sheets (published by IBM) should have gotten me the job. And after all, I was that prepared.OldCannon wrote:My questions were often easier than the "hard" ones given to people applying to be software engineers at Microsoft. Heard it yesterday on the radio, too. Shared it at a dinner party last night. Generally well received!chasfm11 wrote:Trust me... you were not the only ones reading this thread.
