There's always a handful down in DeepEllum, on the weekends, where there is undoubtedly a mass of humanity, as well.
I feel confident the throngs of "artists" are more giving to their fellow man, than, say... me, in my own bubble of self-righteousness.
you see, the Dallas city council has made an ordinance that outlaws panhandling.
any time some "less fortunate" decides I need to be relieved of some of my hard earned cash-money, I inform them that they are breaking the law and the typically are inclined to vacate the premesis.

What do you do at one of the gas stations where they've broken the handle so you HAVE to hold it to pump gas?

In general, I like to set the pump an actually walk away from the car. Maybe to the passenger side or to the front of it. Basically just constantly changing positions, examining my surrondings, and making sure any would be BG is aware I'm purposlt doing so. If the nozzle doesn't have one of those 'catches' for the lever, then I face away from the car when filling up; again examining my surrondings and doing my best to move around.
But in these days and times, you really have to be aware at all times. Using the ATM, at the grocery store, in hospital parking lots for crying out loud. ALways be aware of your surrondings.

I never leave the pump unattended. You don't want that thing, gawd ferbid, backing out of yer gas input port and spewing all over gawd and creation!!
'specially with gas prices what they is.
However, keeping one's head upon a "swivel" is indeed the best course of action.

Good ol' Deep Ellum.
I wish that place would start gaining back ground that it has lost. It's hard going down there for shows knowing that I have to leave the pistol in the van! Ugh.
You definitely have to watch yourself down there.

two words: Pepper Spray.
three words: Duck and Run!!!
honestly, for the five & 1/2 years I've lived in this area, I have never had one single problem.
obviously I'm the exception, but I keep tellin' my ol' lady that I'm special, anyway!!!

short bus special, I know!!
anyway, yeah, DeepEllum has lost a LOT, and after the loss of Trees, most recently, it seems to be losing more.... *tear*
I digress....
here's an idea. when you're loading in/out gear before/after a show, get yourself a "security" guard. this being you, obviously, as you are the one with CHL. just tell the other guys in the band that they have to do the load out/in, since you have the CHL and must, therefore, watch the gear/van!!!!

lemme know how that works out for ya!!!
oh, yeah, only singers don't have to shag gear, right?

I'm always particularly careful at gas stations. I generally use the busy one at Wal-Mart. I either get back in my car or I lean against the car facing away with my head on the swivel while the gas pumps. I've never had anyone bother me at that particular Wal-Mart.
I've had the "perfume" sellers approach me at other gas stations. (Be careful. It may not always be perfume they're wanting you to smell.) I make a big scene of stepping away from them while telling them very firmly that I'm not interested. I usually raise my voice a notch as well.

i have zip ties in the trail bag i keep in my jeep.
i stand with my back to the pump, and hold the handle backwards. always stand where you have the best unobstructed view. if you have an obstacle, use it to watch your back for you. just remember to take an occasional peek around it. if you are up against the pump, they can't see you if you can't see them.
dopers are the best at being alert. their head is on a swivel, but they're usually looking out for cops. just remember to look like a doper and you'll be alright.

Be sure and ground yourself to the vehicle AWAY FROM THE PUMP NOZZLE. DO NOT TOUCH THE NOZZLE BEFORE DOING IT.
Chris, when you move back inside your vehicle and out you build up static.
Seriously, be sure and comply. This goes for the ladies especially when its chilly outside.

You can wedge your gas cap into the handle to keep the trigger pulled.
If your cap is on a lanyard, carry something else suitable. they used to make those plastic devices for this purpose, but lots of common objects work

I don't smoke, but I like to carry cigarrettes and light one up when I am pumping gas. If you hold the cigarette in the same hand as the pump people seem to give you a wide berth.
Sometimes when I am out of cigs, I talk to the spirits really loudly while waving my arms in the air.

I thought you lived in Dallas! I have seen you pumping gas in Houston on several occasions!

.
And if they don't, you can always hit 'em with the hose and hold a Bic up in your other hand?
(was that in a movie?)
