I'm trying to get this straight in my head... the guy had a 3 round, 1 inch group at 300 yards and they wouldn't let him shoot at 400-600 yards?

Thats like shooting .33 MOA or 2 inches at 600 yards

A little "Devil's Advocate" here.

The stated test was to hit a 6" target with 3 shots = Failed.
However, as pointed out, a very impressive failure.

On a personal note, the shooter should pass the test if what is being tested is competency and safety at long range.

Like I said, I understand the policy. Following the "letter of the law" then yeah, it's a failure. However, you'd have to be an automaton incapable of exercising good judgement not to see that as competent shooting. But, I can't dictate someone else's policy. It's their choice, and their revenue loss because I don't believe the guy has been back since.

I don't own a stake in Top Gun and I make nothing from helping with the clubs so don't think I'm arguing against a PSC membership. PSC is an awesome facility and I've been thinking of joining both PSC and the Impact Zone myself. The type of work I usually need to do can't be done at Top Gun except with the clubs and I certainly can't do medium range (300yd) rifle work at Top Gun.

There can be some advantages to an indoor range, but I've never been to one. When I thought that I would have to shoot hollow points I was disappointed, Thanks for clearing it up.

I can understand the failing grade on that attempt, but disallowing him another attempt for qualification? That's the truly bizarre thing.

He can kill a cockroach 3-of-3 shots at sub-300 yards, but just because his scope got bumped on the trip back from Africa he can't even adjust and shoot again? I mean, come on...

To be fair, it's certainly possible this was an isolated incident. I haven't tried to qualify at ASC myself but, I've had several friends who reported bad experiences with ASC management and staff. Of course, I also know there are people who can recall bad experiences with management and staff at Top Gun. So, before we start a boycott of ASC based on third part info, I recommend you guys check the place out for yourself.

I've been a member of http://bayourifles.org for years and seldom find a reason to shoot anywhere else.

Actually, I rather like the staff and atmosphere at Memorial Oaks. The target returns are manually cranked, but the membership is only $50/mo. or $300/yr., and if no one else is waiting for your lane, they usually let you stay for longer than an hour for the $15 fee.

For outdoor ranges, I go to Baily's House of Guns on the south side. It's pretty "rustic", but the fee is $8 per gun for as long as you want.

Some of these places are expensive.

I know I'm paying too much for my range membership, but there's little else nearby.

I think my dad pays under $60 per year for a family membership in the Beaumont area. Although the range isn't posh, it is well-kept.

I just can't see paying $300 per year. You still have to purchase bullets after that!

Its a fine place to go.

My range is PSC in Friendswood. Its a real nice club, well taken care of, and the people are great. I'm always willing to take people out there to see how they like the club. You can find them onlie at http://www.psc-range.com. Membership is around $150 plus a $50 sign up fee and you also must be a member of the NRA. They have two rifle ranges the first allows you to shoot from the standing, prone, or bench rest positions and goes out to 300yrds the second is bench rest only and goes to 200yrds, one pistol range, a combat shotgun range, rimfire only range, archery range, skeet range and even an airgun range. If you are interested in going or joining merely PM me and I would be more than willing to take you out there.
