Maybe the family tried to disquise the fact when they originally said that he shot at the tank and it ricocheted. If they didn't change their story before the autopsy, the medical examiner would have been able to tell from examining the bullet recovered from the man's head.

We shoot propane tanks all the time in NM.
Of course by the time the bullet gets to it we have had time to set the rifle down and take a drink lol.

Well it's a crime by all federal standards and most normal folks to be in the country illegally.. Only the POTUS and his fine fellow believe otherwise.

It is not a crime to be in the country without authorization. It is a crime to enter the country illegally, but the government has found that to be very hard to prove so they usually don't even try.

I'll grant you that it sounds like they were not on a property out in the country so messing with the firearm was probably not legal.
