I have shot one other XD pistol, a friend's XD .40 Compact, and I was suitably impressed with it, which is what got me to thinking about getting one in .45 eventually. They are very good guns. I think the XDm pistols are marginally better. Springfield's pricing reflects that difference, but I didn't care. I waited until the XDm45 Compact was available before making my choice, and I went with the XDm. It seemed worth the price difference to me.

Good stuff. I was actually on the verge of getting an M&P 40 for my wife when an XD40 sub fell into our laps for about $350 and I couldn't pass it up.

I believe my BIL has settled on the XDm 9mm in 3.8. Sounds like a solid choice for his first handgun.

My brother and I were at the range a couple of days ago. He brought both an XD and an M&P in .45 and we shot them back to back. I preferred the XD by a hair and he preferred the M&P by a very slim margin. Both are great and we had to nit pic 'em pretty hard to find faults.

I think the M&P has a better trigger and a shorter reset. It points naturally (as does the XDm), and it is softer shooting than my 5" 1911. But the XDm is softer shooting yet, is lighter, and it has higher capacity......and it is a compact to the M&P being full-sized. So although I really do like my M&P very much, my XDm makes a more practical carry pistol for me. But the M&P is a very good range gun, and it works very well as a carry gun in any situation where I might likely also carry a 5" 1911.

I had an XD9 and traded it back for an XDm9 3.8 which fits my hand better with the small backstrap installed. I love this gun. I qualified with a 250 at my instructor's class with it and I don't have the youngest eyes anymore, LOL. It has never had a single failure of any kind. I have observed it is a popular gun brought to CHL qualifications by new students. They will limp wrist it, ride the slide, etc and it still works tolerantly of these newbie mistakes.
