I'll put the plain wood ones on first, probably order the shield, take it to the range in 2030 and try it out and go from there, I still have unfired sks rifles from the 1980s lol (I had several I fired too) Assuming the world doesn't end in 2012 ...

I put a standard AK lower handguard on my AMD65 off of a Polish AK. Some minor fitting to the wood and it fits perfectly.
Takes care of the heat problem and looks a thousand percent better.
In my opinion, the AMD is the best/cheapest deal out there right now if you want an AK style weapon.
$465.00 was the cheapest I have seen them, and that was at a gun show.

The absolute best folding AK solution in my opinion is a AKM100 series side folding triangle stock. the plastic side folder is great too. Feels good locked up and locks to the left side of receiver away from trigger and bolt, mag, etc.

I have a poly and a metal side folder AK. Plastic is more comfortable, but my Krink came with the metal and I want to keep it original. They are definitely the best stocks, but unfortunately pretty pricey to get a build like that.
Kvar sells a similar item that you can fit to any AK.

It was what I was going to use originally and from what I've seen work well. I have an unused one (ordered the wrong stock for the gunsmith) that I'd sell off or trade if anyone was interested.

Jeepguy79, that's the sort of configuration that I'd like to get in an AK. I'm an "AR guy", but I'd like to start gaining new skills.
I like to have my carbines equipped with a zero magnification sight (as far forward as is feasible), as well as a flashlight mount (preferably with a flashlight that can be taken off in a pinch). Any suggestions as to mounts?

What you want for a forward RDS is an ultimak. I have one but no optic for it yet, check out this link.

That looks almost exactly like what I'd like. Simple, no need for a whole bunch of tacticool rails....just enough for a micro RDS, and a bone-simple clamp for a surefire coming off the side.
I know you don't have your optic yet, but have you done any research as to what sort of co-witness most micro RDS offer when mounted that way? Bottom 1/3? Absolute? Inquiring minds and all....

The primary arms micro dot is probably what I'll get. They have been well reviewed and were made with the ak in mind I think. You can cowitness as well.

Obviously an Aimpoint T1 would be preferred.
I like the ultimak more than the Midwest rail setup as I have no need for side or lower rails. The ultimak is also a replacement gas tube, versus the MI piece that goes over the existing tube.

I've got a Bushnell TRS25 RDS on an UltiMAK on my MAK90. It cowitnesses when even the tiny Burris FastFire2 wouldn't.
