sweet rifle!!!!

Update...FINALLY got to take the Mauser to the range. I only put one box of 20 Prvi Partizan 196 grain soft points through it as I was pressed for time, so many things to do when you are only home for a week. Anyway, all fired at 50 yards. Used one of those targets with the red diamond shape in the middle and four more, smaller diamonds kind of in each corner. Shot two 5 round groups to begin with aiming for the bullseye...the first one was approximately 2x2 inches, though about 5 inches low and the other was about 1.5x3 inches, about 2 inches low. I know that isn't very good for 50 yards, but it was with the Mauser open sights and it was my first time ever shooting that thing. I had a Pachmayer "Decelerator" slip on pad on the buttstock and it made the recoil quite okay. Better than the Mosin, that is for sure. The other 10 rounds I fired at the little diamonds in the corners, moving from diamond to diamond. I managed to get 3 out of the 10 into the diamonds, and another four within a couple of inches of the diamonds. The last three seemed like they were off the paper, probably off to the sides, but there were too many holes in the other targets underneath mine to tell. Wish I had pictures, but I left the cell in my truck. The only problem I had with the rifle was failure to feed a couple of rounds, seemed like the lifter spring didn't push the round up enough. All in all, I am impressed with that rifle, I am going to have to set up to reload now. I want to shoot it more, but the ammo is pricey.

In 1964 a buddy of my dad’s gave him a Mauser bolt. Living in Munich Germany at the time, my dad took this bolt to the Munich Gun Club and asked a gunsmith there to build a .308 around it. He did, and a beautiful Mauser has been in the family since. My parents divorced in 1985 and my dad moved to Colorado. He loaned the rifle to a friend who shot it with snow in the barrel and it damaged it, but he had a smith cut the barrel down removing the front sight, and put a scope on it, and then gave it to me. This rifle can still put five rounds within an inch at 100 yards and is one of my most cherished possessions.

Anyway, I have a fondness for Mausers and thought I would share. Also, how difficult and expensive would it be to get a barrel replaced? Anyone know a good gunsmith in the west Fort Worth area? I would like to get it restored.

I wish I could help you with your gunsmith search but I'm still learning the area myself. I wouldn't mind having the barrel on mine replaced with a .308 barrel but only if it could be done in a manner that wouldn't alter the final appearance of the weapon. And I'd imagine that would be a tall order to fill. I enjoy hearing about family treasures like that one and I hope you get the info you need.

Assuming that some random guy on the internet is right, you can get the barrel at Brownell's.

Dunno about the gunsmithing part, though. Sorry.
