I do not consider anyone who voted for this pile of trash to be a Republican no matter what letter is behind their name. As someone said, time to fund primary challengers. Don't say it can't work...we got Ted Cruz, didn't we?

I am sorry for those families, but using our taxpayer supported plane to apply the arm twisting and emotional drama is wrong. The tactic is without shame and goes against the intent of the separation of powers. No wonder every politician there is finding it difficult to be against doing something to appease the circus. I have to say I am very proud of Cruz and Rand Paul for their unblinking courage. The ones who are caving in should be voted out.
You are being way too nice.

Yes, but Ted Cruz was only considered because Kay Bailey Hutchison was leaving the Senate of her own accord. IOW, we did not un-elect her to put Mr. Cruz in, she left and we used the opprutunity to get someone better. Unseating an encumbant is difficult to say the least.

Ultimately, today's vote isn't the one that counts. Many stated they wanted to debate the bill.
It's their votes from now on that should be held against them.

Someone needs to see if these idiots (to include Democrats, obviously) remember these words, "...when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."

Now the 16 Republican senators are no longer just talking about background checks. Now they have voted to facilitate watering down the 2nd amendment. Actions do indeed speak more loudly than words alone. Are the 16 just smarter than the rest of us? Whom do they stand with? It's very telling that both Senators Cruz and Cornyn voted against cloture today. They get it. They appreciate what's at stake. The 16 do not. And the 16 are all Republicans. I anticipate they will run for cover when the final bill comes up for vote, saying that they voted against it. But the vote that counts was today's vote. And everyone knows it.

I disagree. The vote that counts is the vote that makes it law.

Even if this bill passes the Senate, it has to go to the house and pass there as well prior to being sent to Obama. I don't see that happening.
Of course I didn't see Obamacare being upheld as constitutional so what do I know.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) signaled Thursday that he may continue to bypass a House Republican rule [i.e. the "Hastert Rule"] that has required any legislation being voted upon to have the support of a majority of the GOP conference…
He said at a news conference Thursday that he will continue to try and follow it in spirit, but also suggested he might well violate it for upcoming votes on guns, immigration and the budget.
“Listen: It was never a rule to begin with,” Boehner said. “And certainly my prerogative – my intention is to always pass bills with strong Republican support.”

Froggie, what is the purpose of the filibuster rule in the Senate? Is it only to be used by Democrats? The filibuster actually extends the debate. Ending a filibuster shortens the time for consideration of a bill. In this case, there have been no hearings, no regular order. The text of the senate bill(s) is not even available for review by the public or by the senators who will be debating and voting. The filibuster is a legitimate rule in the Senate, and has been for a long, long time. Senators know that the 60 vote filibuster rule is a much more effective tool than the 51 vote majority vote on bills. It is self evident that the vote that counts is today's bill, simply because the Republicans don't have a majority. But they could have used the 60 vote aspect of the filibuster cloture vote. Or do we just concede the use of the filibuster to the antis?

The NRA already supports the Graham amendment. You would think they would have supported the Paul/Cruz/Lee filibuster. No new legislation would be far better than any compromise proposed by those who wish to appease the anti-gunners. Appeasement never works, by the way. Ask Europe circa 1936.
