This is incorrect.

1) There is no legal requirement for the 30.06 sign to be placed at an entrance. It must merely be posted in a place conspicuous to the public.

2) If the30.06 language was on the membership app (it's not right now) then that constitutes legal notice. They can also give you a card or other piece of paper with the 30.06 language on it and that constitutes notice. Or, if a person with authority to do so (manager, for example) were to tell you that firearms were not allowed, that is also legal notice and does not have to be the 30.06 language.

So for sake of discussion. If it was in membership application and I signed it then I have been given notice. If I bring a guest with me how are they supposed to know firearms are not allowed? They have not been given notice.

Correct. And your point is?

Although, I believe it is in the membership app that you are responsible for ensuring that your guests play by their rules. So even though it would be legal for them to carry (since they haven't been given notice), it is conceivable that should Costco discover that your guest was carrying, YOUR membership could be terminated (but you still didn't commit a crime since you weren't the one carrying).

But it's really a moot point. Costco doesn't post 30.06 signs, put the 30.06 language in the membership app, hand you a card/paper with the 30.06 language on it, and doesn't make a habit of giving oral notice.

He was given oral notice, by the head of security saying guns were not allowed in the store. He disregarded the claim by the head of security and told him that they could not prevent him from having his gun or something to that effect. That's when the police were secretly called. Costco is as much to blame as they pumped up the event on the 911 call and probably got the police afraid of just about anything before they even arrived.

I will look into the application as I remember it being a point that was made that it stated no guns. There are definitely no signs at my local Costco or the one in Las Vegas.

Well, first, I wasn't commenting on the LV Vostco shooting. I was responding to the hypothetical situation posed by the person I quoted. Second, no other state has the same requirements as TX. I'm unsure whether oral notice is required in NV, and, TBH, since I'm not likely to ever go there, don't really care.

Finally, from my reading regarding this case, he DID (or rather, he was in the process) comply with the request to leave, but Costco had called the police before he was able to exit the building. It was only once he was outside that he was confronted by officers giving him conflicting orders ("drop the gun", "don't move", "get on the ground", etc). Allegedly he reached for his pistol, perhaps to comply with the order to "drop it", perhaps to shoot it out with the cops (who knows at this point), when he was shot.

Be my guest. I've read through it several time in response to other threads re: Costco and never been able to find it. But, should you happen to find it, keep in mind hat it means nothing in this state unless the language meets 30.06.

That would be one interpretation.

Another would be that Costco initiated and exacerbated the circumstances that led to his death and is civilly culpable for his death.

Personally I will never set foot in a Costco as long as I live, and I could care less if they're the cheapest in town, if they're not legally compliant with Texas law or not or whether or not they're the only place in the world where you can buy green widgits. I'll do without before I'll give them one thin dime.

But that's just me. I tend to put my money where my mouth is.

We went to Costco today, renewed our membership, bought a couple of items, drug the free food sample vendor stations, looked Managers Ted and Cody in their eyes and said 'howdy', used the Costco restrooms, and left in a leisurely manner with my Compact SA 1911 Lightweight on my hip, cocked and locked, all the while. No problems.

But then again, I wasn't looking for any confrontations or other mischief nor did I look like I had a secret or was guilty of something. YMMV, eh?

here are the instructions to get to the website to find the rule about Costco, no they can't have you arrested however they can terminate your membership, they can also have you removed from the store

What Costco does have is a policy deeply buried on a third-party website which says firearms are not allowed. What does that mean for you if you are a Costco customer? How can you possibly adhere to a policy which is not prominently displayed? The answer is you cannot. You were not provided with the policy when you signed up with Costco, it is not displayed on the doorway and it is not displayed in an easy to get to place on the website. Now if you are found with a firearm they can ask you to leave, just as any business can ask you to leave the premises. They might also cancel your membership, but that is really all that can happen if you are found on the property with a firearm. The solutions are simple, don’t have a firearm on the property, or be sure you don’t print.

Anyway, let’s demonstrate what it takes to find the policy.
◾Go to the Costco website
◾Select “Customer Service” in the upper right corner
◾Select “Costco Member Questions & Comments”
◾Select “Warehouse, Business Centers or Membership”
◾In the pop-up window:
◾1 – Select “Other” in the dropdown menu
◾2 – Type in “firearms” in the text box
◾3 – enter an email address (any address will work)
◾Select “Next”
◾Select the link “Personal Firearms/Guns in Costco Stores“

A bit painful to find and buried so deep in the website, actually on a third-party website, that it would be difficult for anyone to show you should have known the policy.

The Policy is as follows

Costco Wholesale is a membership-only warehouse club. It is not open to the general public. It restricts membership to a limited group of qualified individuals who agree to membership conditions. We have the right and the obligation to our members, to enact and enforce membership rules. The Member Service Employees at the exit doors are obliged to follow these rules. By obtaining a Costco membership card, our members agree to comply with the Membership Rules and the Privileges and Conditions of membership.

Costco does not believe that it is necessary for firearms to be brought into its warehouse stores, except in the case of authorized law enforcement officers. For the protection of all our members and employees, we feel this is a reasonable and prudent precaution to ensure a pleasant shopping experience and safe workplace. Our policy is meant to protect our members and employees in all warehouses around the world. This is not a new policy and we do not customize the policy for each individual city/county/state/country where we do business.

Our primary goal at Costco Wholesale is to keep our members happy. If you believe that our policy restricting members from bringing firearms into our warehouse stores is either unfair or excessively burdensome, or you cannot agree to abide by this policy, or you are dissatisfied for any other reason, Costco will promptly refund your annual membership fee in full.

My wife asked me today if we should renew our membership since it's due. Guess this makes the decision for me. No renewal. Oh well….

Well, since its not in the membership app or any information they send you, and since Costco has gone to such lengths to hide the policy, AND since Costco hasn't seen fit to post their stores as legally required... I'm just gonna continue to carry my concealed firearm whenever I go.

No 30.06 = "Bite me!":

Wouldn't they seek customer feedback on this issue, instead of blindly pushing their anti agenda, if customer happiness actually motivated this policy? I'd be much happier if I could carry there and not violate their terms.

Still not 30.06 language, I don't care if they don't have time/resources/gumption to customize the policy for each state. The ONLY way to prohibit firearms in Texas is either 30.06 sign, written notice per 30.06 in the membership package, or tell each customer as they come in the door verbally.
Welcome to Costco, we love you, no firearms allowed.

The ultra-liberal Jim Sinegal, Costco co-founder, Director, and former CEO, is a major Obumbler and Dumbocrat contributor, as has been, and is currently, the company itself, so why would anyone shop at Costco at all? You do realize that by shopping there you are nearly directly funding the enemy, right? It never ceases to amaze me the lengths to which some will go to apparently save a few pennies on ground beef at the expense of our Constitutional rights. Oh, that's right, if you can do so while carrying your 1911, it's all okay, regardless of the fact that you are pumping money into Nancy Pelosi's reelection campaign.

Personally, if you tell me either directly (as in the form of a valid 30.06 sign or your via your massive contributions to the Second-Amendment-ignoring, gun-confiscating Dumbocrat party) or indirectly (as in the form of an invalid 30.06 or any other gunbuster sign) that you don't want my business, you get your wish---every single time, and I'm willing to, and do, put my money where my mouth is as integrity, values and, morals trump the price of ground beef each and every time.

Agreed and I will be frequenting their Sugar Land location when it opens.
