When I was a kid we used to go to Port Aransas just a week or so after the public schools started up again. Weather was great, hotels were less expensive (my mom thinks Motel 6 is camping), and we'd have the beach almost to ourselves. We'd see a handful of other families, but there was enough space that we could keep to ourselves if we wanted or go say hi if we felt like it.

We LOVE Port A and go down in late September, when kids are back in school. There is I.B. Magee Beach Park, with spaces right off the beach. I don't really know much about it, and their website is under redesign right now. I also have some friends who go to Pioneer Beach Resort every year with their big trailer. It seems pretty nice.
