Melonite is a trademark owned by Durferrit GMBH.
It's origin is from the mineral, a telluride of nickel, used to make the coating.
The mineral is mined from the Melones and Stanislaus mine, Carson hill, Calaveras County, California.
Gold nuggets the shape and size of melon seeds reportedly account for the naming of Melones.

It's the government, cheaper bid usually wins and plain black is cheaper than multi-colored.

When shopping for a small gun for dear wife a couple of years ago, the plain P238s looked a little boring (if that could be an attribute
), so we opened up the wallet quite a bit for some bling and walked out with the P238 Equinox. Fortunately she didn't want the Rainbow version that the LGS said was popular with the ladies.

It's actually quite simple: Bi-tone handguns are far prettier than their mono-toned counterparts and, therefore, shoot much better, hence, the additional cost.

A little known fact is that they only shoot better if you stick your tongue out at the correct specified angle when you line up the sights and pull the trigger.

My S&W Sigma is Bi-Tone and cost less than $300.
