Jules Verne didn't completely predict nuclear power but he had most of the concept correct. Orwell may be closer to accuracy than any of us would hope.
I've been watching the credit card payment reports and then saw this one this morning.

I don't need much of a tin foil hat to have a bad feeling about that one. As one who is currently covered by Medicare, I'm part of the pool.

The “meaningful use” program already requires doctors and hospitals to report the demographics of a patient and if he smokes to qualify for its first step. The second stage, planned for 2014, will require recording a patient’s family health history.
The National Academy of Sciences will make recommendations for adding social and behavioral data for stage three, which will be unveiled in 2016.
Harumph! My wife recently went through cataract surgery. EVERY time she went in to an appointment, the first question out of their mouth was always "Do you smoke?" One of the assistants there volunteered that the question "pops up" on the screen first thing when they look up a patient's record. Well, that got me curious, and I started asking what happens to that information. Their answer was that it "just went into the system". I tried to get them to answer if it got reported somewhere (like to the government), but nobody seemed to know -- or would admit to knowing.

Doctor can charge for counseling about smoking cessation

The eye surgeon can? I don't think it had anything to do with that.

All the new electronic records have the "smoking" part in them. Yes, the doctor has a code to charge for smoking cessation counseling. Any doctor can file it with Medicare and probably private insurance. You probably wouldn't know if he/she did. Just another government interference in medicine. Can't tell you if that's what happens in your wife's case.

Except it has become "functionally illegal" to carry more than, or have in your possession in a safe, more than a couple hundred bucks. Can't keep $10,000 in a safe anymore cuz they'll call it "drug money" and confiscate it.

While I understand the point that you are making, how would "They" gain access to my safe or safety deposit box without a warrant?
I wouldn't travel with large sums of cash, most auction houses and large collectors prefer wire transfers. But I do keep a significant "Gun Money" fund in cash. Cash is for those times when a cashiers check, or like instrument, isn't readily accomplished or the seller prefers cash in hand.
I've filed plenty of form 8300's in my business career, I know my banks report large withdrawals and deposits that I've made. This has had no effect on how I conduct myself, my purchasing for my collection, or sales that I've made when making a change in the collection.

Nice that you trust warrants are still necessary, but I wouldn't put anything valuable in a safety deposit box at a bank today --money most especially. You think the IRS would have any problem getting access to your box? All they have to do is decide to look at you for whatever reason. My father got a $200,000 tax bill from the IRS, and they knew he wasn't the guy they were looking for....different middle names and different social security numbers. They admitted this on the phone, but it didn't stop them from putting a lien on his bank account. He couldn't even get a cell phone until the lien was removed. Last year I read about the Feds prosecuting a couple for withdrawing their own money out of the bank....because they took out $10,000 over some period of time in increments of less than the reporting requirement. The only thing preventing anyone of us from going to prison under this government isn't innocence of a crime, but having not yet been targeted for whatever reason.

Sure, if you're buying at "Buds gun shop" it's probably firearm related, but buy at Academy and it could be a number of things.
Regardless of the BO - some large private entity is going to have a list of your transactions - vendor and cost.. I don't care if it's VISA, MC, or BO... It's in a database somewhere.
Sure, I've even bought a gun on a credit card and it was from a sporting goods store --all it showed was the amount. But I think your focus is too narrow. This isn't just about guns. With Obamacare they're going to be collecting data about everything....including your sex life, what you drink, and what you eat --whether or not you smoke. What dangerous activities you may be participating in, like motorcross, or skiing, sky diving, scuba diving, snowboarding, surfing, or driving a motorcycle. I just said BO cause he's the prez now. This isn't all going to go away when he leaves office. The surveillance state is growing exponentially. I don't want the government to know how much I spent at the liquor store or that I ordered pizza delivery three times this week. I don't want them to know I spent $400 at the gas station last month. There is no way that information is not going to be used for control --whether in the form of taxes or outright prohibitions. You use too much gasoline....tax. You eat too much pizza, not good for you, costs Obamacare more....tax. You ride a motorcycle, dangerous and costly for Obamacare....tax. And then, who's to say, that while the "what" may not be recorded now, the Feds won't make it a requirement in the future? For the Feds, there is no such thing as "enough."
