Your actions - open carry on your own property - were perfectly legal, and under the circumstances, sound.
But if you weren't already on good terms with the police chief
and weren't the former police chief yourself, your actions could draw an undesired response from LEOs in some jurisdictions.
So IMHO before anyone emulates you in a similar situation, they really ought to think it through, and give due consideration to the jurisdiction
they live in.

I've given it thought, and haven't hesitated to open carry on my own property when working outside (quiet suburban neighborhood in a small town).
A situation like this wouldn't be likely to build for long in my neighborhood, though: the police chief lives on a cul-de-sace directly behind me, and has to pass down my street on his way to the station.

Are you calling Texarkana a small town?
I have five to ten feet of yard between my house and the right of way, in a built-up neighborhood. I would not carry openly in that strip because it would probably create nuisance 911 calls.

okay, since no one is going to say it...
You, are lucky.
Why, goofball, is he lucky??
Well, you went out, and told the whole world, "Ya'll lookin' fer a gun ta steal??"
at night? naw. during the day, when you're at work, and no one's home.
or anytime else. doesn't matter.
point is, they knew for a fact that you had weaponry on your property.
did this thing work out REALLY well, in the end? oh, yeah. so congrats to you on managing to run off your neighbors, who were probably the lowest dredge of society, scourge of humanity.
My point, I wouldn't go advertising that you're packing to a criminal element.
but seriously, I am glad things worked out for the best.

I have no intention of getting anyone to emulate my actions, HankB.
Just saying what worked for me in this situation. Everyone's situation is different, what works for one might not work for another.
Common sense and knowledge of the law and how it is applied/enforced in anyone else's locale should prevail in every situation.

pbandjelly, your response is EXACTLY the reason why I do not post on TexasCHLforum any more than I do.
At my age and position in life, and considering what I have done for a living and successfully retired from, I believe I am totally capable of assessing a situation and determining the course of action that needs to be taken.
I also feel no great need to be talked down to like I was a child.

I believe I am the forum's youngest, consistently posting member. Feel free to speak up if I'm wrong. Maybe it's
because I'm younger, but the way people my age use it, the above-emboldened word is definitely
not "11 year-old daughter safe", as I believe Chas put it.

Way to go DaveT!
Sounds like you handled the situation appropriately and I think that it's bad form for others here on this forum to second guess your actions.
You did not make a post requesting responses as to "Did I do the right thing?". You were informing us of something that you had done.
Again, congratulations and thank you for sharing this with us.

reeeeeeeeeelax.
I wasn't talking down to you.
I was merely expressing MY opoinion that I would not advertise what I have.
do please come back and post more.

You don't need to advertise. I would be surprised if fewer than half the homes in Texas had some kind of firearm, probably more than one.

ya know, the whole point of this place is to further discussion.
I was offering a critique, and included what I would have done.
feel free to go find my posts and critique any and all things that I have said/done. that's what posting on a public forum is for, discussion.

DaveT wrote:This story is about a rent house across the street and low class 'renters from heck'. Lady who owns the house lives far off in Lubbock, all she cares about is the rent money, never does anything to fix up the house. As a result, there have been an endless series of very strange and often annoying folks living there.
Most recent renters have been the worst. Ex con with a girlfriend 20 years younger than him, she just had his baby so they now have the state and welfare money to live on. They did not pay rent for 6 months, but always had lots of cigarettes, booze and beer. Loud parties, four barking dogs and lots of friends with loud cars and trucks who just had to peel out and leave rubber whenever leaving.
<snip>
What are you secretly my next door neighbor???
Howdy then!...
No, just kidding, but this sounds exactly like the house across the street from me; and yes, I have worn very open many times for the same reasons... Best of all, it works.
Then after a few months, the inhabitants of the house changes, and I 'advertise' once again and things tend to quieten down and they move!
This last bunch, however, seem to be a bit more law-abiding, now, because I've only had to dial 911 on them once.
And NO! My house has never been broken into and ransacked for guns because of it... maybe the large dog with big white teeth has something to do with it???
