I should add (the other post is long enough already) that I used to be a 40/45 and everything else is crap guy until last year. I feel comfortable with a 9mm as long as its with modern hollow points. For any caliber I prefer Federal HST and if I can't find those then Speer Gold Dots.
I should also mention that one of the guys I used to work with is an FFL. He would talk to the local Federal ammo rep who had a laptop full of ballistics. He said there was no noticeable difference between 9 and 40 but there is with a 45. He also said that if you carry a 380 you're better off using a FMJ because the hollow point round for 380 won't penetrate deep enough. For this part I heard it all from my friend/old coworker/FFL holder who talked to the Federal rep and saw the laptop. I know it could be considered hearsay so I'm just throwing that out there.
If you look online Federal HST in 9mm and in 45 both have impressive expansion, weight retention, and penetration.

learning to shoot a Glock now
point and shoot, six shot strings, 10 yds, rapid fire
(strange to burn six rounds and realize I have TEN left!) :)

True, in both hunting and self defense, shot placement is much more important than who has the biggest bullet.doc540 wrote: One of my firearm mentors convinced me that shot placement trumps caliber. (And I've been a .45 ACP guy.)
But all else being equal, punching a larger hole does more damage.

Welcome to the dark (plastic) side.

I love 1911s...but it's just so easy to carry a lighter weight, higher capacity gun.
Besides, I never feel guilty for sweating all over and dirtying up a Glock.

Re: Carry Gun Paradigm Shift
I started off with a Glock 19 back in the early 90's. When the .40 S&W round came out I switched to a 23 and than later a 27. I also had a 22 for home defense. Than about 4 or 5 years ago I sold off all my Glocks and started carrying a full size 1911 and than an Ultra Carry. I love the look and feel of the 1911 and especially the trigger but there's something to be said about capacity and not having to worry so much about having to carry an extra magazine. I always felt that carrying the biggest caliber that I can accurately shoot was the best thing to do and I gradually went up in calibers till I got to the .45 ACP and .357 Magnum. But the quality of the defensive ammunition that manufacturers are coming up with has me rethinking the 9mm round and getting a polymer gun, either a Glock 19 or an XDm 3.8. Doesn't hurt that I would be going to a lighter carry weapon as well and one that has a light rail.
