I'm partial to 357sig, but it is expensive to shoot. I have a SIG P229/357sig and I have a Glock33(357sig). I have 40S&W barrels for both guns and 9mm conversion barrels.

you have that option with the XD as well...

Purchase the .40 and you then can purchase the .357 Sig or the 9mm barrel if you please.

My vote goes to the XD. I have an XD SC9 and it is great. I too prefer the grip safety combined with the trigger saftey.

I have shot Glocks in the past and owned one as collateral for a loan for a while, but I am not a fan.

Here's another vote for the XD.

In my opinion the only advantage that Glock has over the XD is the easy availability of parts, both factory and after market. If your XD breaks it means a trip back to Springfield in most cases, since Springfield Armory will not sell or provide most parts for self installation.

Magazine availability used to be a problem but this issue seems to be resolved. Magazines are available at reasonable prices (about $20.00 for the 9mm and 40 cal most places) and are stainless steel. The only exception are the extended magazines for the subcompact..they are seriously overpriced at $35.00 or so in my opinion.

The XD is a natural pointer for me. The Glock was not. But, what feels best to me or, anyone else for that matter, may not feel right to your hands. Try them both and go with what feels best to you. They are both fine weapons and you can't go wrong with either.

If you had asked this 6 months ago, I would have said XD hands down. I was ignorantly biased against Glock's due to their (perceived) lack of a safety. I have since had the opportunity to spend a lot of range time with one and I just bought one this past weekend at the Market Hall gun show. In the hands of a mildly competent person who knows about guns and the associated safety rules, it is just as safe as the XD. The aftermarket for Glocks is HUGE. There are more options for the Glock for holsters, and pretty much any other accessory you can think of. You can get a drop in trigger kit with a polished connector for about $25. The same in an XD will run at least $75. If you want a custom trigger on an XD it will run you in the neighborhood of $200. A Glock will run you half that or less.

As far as reliability, the Glocks are proven over & over again, and they are unbelievably simple. Of course they've been out a lot longer than the XD. I think XD will probably prove to be as good. I can shoot either one equally well. Best advice I can give is find somewhere you can run a few hundred rounds through each and pick the one you like best. [/i]

Do you have other guns? If this is your first, I would say Glock. I would say Glock regardless.

There's no gun that can beat Glock in terms of reliability, simplicity, and quality. Name one, if you can.

I tell you I used to be diehard 1911 fun and thought Glock was so boxy and ugly. Well, after I bought one, I almost bought one more and I am still thinking about getting one more.

The only problem I have with Glock, mine is 19, it is a little too bulky to carry. I don't feel comfortable carrying a gun with no external safety.

My G19 stays either in my car or my bed side.

First off, if it goes bang...I like it...

If its ugly, doesn't matter...

If its purty, doesn't matter either...

Glock just happened to be the right fit, at the right time...I just don't think about it anymore...Its just become such a part of my psyche, that I notice more if its not there...

It could have been the Sig, or that Dan Wesson wheelgun I had years ago...

One of these days each and everyone of us is going to have a day where you just stop thinking about it and one becomes the dominate carry piece...

Sure you'll shoot a lot of different firearms over the years, but one will become dominate...

The fun is in the journey to that day, then the rest of the time you'll be searching to find something to unseat it...

But thats just my opinion...I'm trying to convert my Dad to something a bit more mainstream, but he is so set in his ways I might be flogging a dead horse...But that effort is still fun and a challenge at the same time...

I really doubt you could hurt either one of them unless you took a hammer to it. Everyday carry of either brand would likely take years before there was any serious wear on them.

So far I have managed to break an extractor on the Glock 17 I use for IDPA and wear down a recoil spring assembly. Fifteen bucks and about two minutes of combined labor (if you want to call it that) and they were both replaced.

srsly, I carry my Glock'n Wesson quite often. it doesn't fire as long as I don't pull the trigger, or don't allow anyone/-thing pull it.

I believe he's referring to an external mechanical safety like the one on a 1911. The XD and GLOCK both have mechanical safeties that are on the trigger, and the XD has a backstrap safety like the 1911. The only other type I know of is where the safety is not integral to holding/firing the weapon, and that may be something like the 1911's or something like my Pop's shotgun had (a sideways-sliding push-button safety in the front of the trigger guard). It's a comfort thing, like folks who don't carry their 1911 cocked-n-locked (hey, it's safe, it doesn't just "go off" without some manual intervention, but some folks aren't comfortable like that).

Sorta reminds me of the story about the state trooper who was spotted carrying a 1911 cocked-n-locked by a citizen who asked him "Isn't that dangerous?" and he replied he wouldn't be carrying it if it wasn't dangerous...

The XD and the Glock are both excellent firearms.

You won't go wrong with either. I also suggest that you go and shoot both and then you should pick the one that you are most comfortable with.

I went to buy a Glock and ended up with an XD. The Glock grip angle is not natural for me, where the XD's is.

A guy I work with is in this same boat. He went to TWO different gun shops and the sales people at both had nothing GOOD to say about the XDs. They said, yea there nice and reliable guns but it is VERY hard to get them worked on, find parts/holsters for. One store has a in shop gun smith who wont work on XDs. He said they had a customer that wanted night sights put on his XD and he fought with it and eventually scratch it and the customer made them buy him another pistol. So to get ti worked on you will prob have to sent back to SA and thats like 60 bucks a pop to sent it over night each time. Like some of the others said I would chose glocks just cause it has glocks reputation of corse and it is SO much easier to make it your own with accessories and such. Just my two cents.
