That's what they say. At least that's what their commissioned non-attorney sales people say.
What I want to see:
1) References to actual cases where they have defended clients. To date, they haven't provided this.
2) Actual "zero cost" clients who are willing to be references.
[pre-paid legal] cites "privacy" when indicating that they will not provide any case references. That's fine, but cases are matters of public record. And dispositions of those cases should be of great interest to anyone who considers this to a form of legal representation. Sorry, that doesn't pass the "smell" test for me. Neither does allowing them into my CHL class.
And sorry, the math doesn't work out for me. If I'm a defendant in a criminal trial, I want the best attorney I can afford. Assigning me an attorney that gets paid some % of several membership fees - is he or she really going to be motivated to work hard?
Just askin...
All fair concerns. How much attorney can you afford? Who will you call at zero dark thirty when you shoot the bad guy?
I already know, and mine is paid for.

When I got my CHL I checked one of the companies that offered this type of service. I don't recall the name of the company. When I sent an email to get a copy of the actual contract they told me I would get a copy after I signed up. That seemed fishy to me.
I am not endorsing [Pre-paid legal service], but their website actually has a copy of what you are signing up for. That is a good sign.
Some people refer to this as "insurance". I am not a lawyer, but in my opinion it is not insurance since the providers are not licensed to provide insurance in the state of Texas.
I am not sure what it would be called other than a contract or retainer to provide legal services. As a layman, I can't be certain of that.

I checked 2 or 3 options several times over 3 or 4 months and finally decided to do something. I'm giving [Pre-paid legal service] a try. Supposedly they will be there for ANY legal firearm related situation. Hopefully I don't need them.....but.

"Scores" of CHL's in trouble? Interesting claim since only 120 CHLs were convicted of anything in 2012 (last data published) in the entire State.

This thread is rapidly turning into a sales pitch for [pre-paid legal]. If it continues, it will be deleted.

Chasmeister, you're in the field. What would be good suggestions for your happy go lucky CHLer in this instance, or even a CHLer with a wife who views curbs and walls as mere guidelines.
This is in regards to prior to any event occurring, when CHLers are just worried about liability, not after - Heavev forbid - assistance is actually needed.

Sounds like teacher was an idiot who needed to actually read the CHL handbook.

I would never discourage anyone from purchasing any insurance or pre-paid legal plans they think are appropriate. My only caution is to make sure you know what you are getting and equally important, what you are not getting. Read the contract thoroughly. Can the attorney withdraw representation for any reason or no reason?
I do recommend getting the NRA self-defense insurance. It is true insurance meaning you are provided defense counsel in civil matters. In criminal cases, the public policy of Texas (and other states) prohibits one from insuring their criminal acts, so the policy becomes a reimbursement policy. That means you have to pay for your own defense, but you can be reimbursed for your defense costs, if you win, are not indicted, etc.
I do not have a pre-paid legal plan, but if I were to decide to purchase one, I would also get the NRA self-defense insurance to cover (reimbursement basis) the costs not covered by pre-paid legal plans.
Oh, did I mention to
make sure you understand what you are not getting in a pre-paid legal plan?

NON-MEMBER NIGHTMARE: WHEN IT GOES WRONG
After a late dinner at a local burger joint, a high school math teacher (and a new concealed carry license holder) is driving home with his wife, when a pick-up truck pulls up very close behind their car. It then swerves around their car and races past with the rude truck driver yelling harsh words and giving "friendly" gestures. Unfortunately, shortly after this episode, road construction brings all traffic to a halt with the teacher's car behind the pick-up truck. The truck driver gets out of his truck and starts walking toward the teacher's car. The teacher seeing this and wanting to keep any confrontation away from his wife, exits his car. But in the heat of the moment the teacher forgets to put the car in park, so his car continues rolling forward and smashes the rude driver's truck. The truck driver, after the collision, is none too happy at this point.
BAD TO WORSE
In what can only be described as making a bad situation worse, the teacher freaks out over the course of events and draws his concealed carry pistol and fires warning shots to diffuse the situation. The driver of the truck rushes back in his vehicle and speeds off. The teacher is arrested later that night and charged with felony assault.
BUT THEN IT GOT REALLY STRANGE...
While rotting in a county jail waiting for his wife to sell her hair to cancer patients to raise bail money, one of the bigger stronger inmates, Bubba, decided to befriend him. That could have been unpleasant, but just as Bubba was approaching our hero, an alien spaceship arrived and transported the teacher to their spaceship in a bright beam of light. The really sad part is that the aliens had pretty much the same intentions for the teacher as Bubba. They strapped him to a table and began to attach all kind of electrodes to his body. Our teacher knew he was in serious trouble. It seemed like all summer passed by as the spinning, gleaming probing thing descended from the ceiling. Then Pam woke up and Bobby was alive. It had all been a terrible dream.

Thank you again! Excellent advice. I never knew about the NRA insurance option. The wife and I will have to check into that.

After some years, I'm STILL waiting to read a real life, first hand experience from a CHL holder who shot somebody with his weapon in self defense and utilized one of these services. I'd like to know what actually happened, what they actually DID and when they did it. But so far, nothing.

Given the small number of CHL involved shootings and the much much smaller number of [pre-paid legal] customers, it wouldn't surprise me if their aren't any examples.
It's actually a good business model - money coming in - no money going out. Other than advertising, it's all profit.
