The altercation with the principal was whether I should be there at all, not over CC. His stance was that the bike path should not be used at all by non-school personnel during the school day. Since you asked, I'll provide some more details.
Sounds like you should give the Director of City Works/ Parks & Rec a call and inform him that the school district has annexed the bike trail. Should save his department a fortune in maintenance.

I do believe, that if I took the time, I could overcome the problems at the elementary school. I'm not at all optimistic that the middle school has a solution - and I have to pass both on my rides.

I think if it took me less than a minute to cross the school property I wouldn't stop to chat unless it was the SRO flagging me down.
If some pompous administrator stepped on the bike path to try to make me crash, I would call 911 to report him. Let's see where that goes after some of my bike riding neighbors also complain to the police about him intentionally or knowingly threatening them with imminent bodily injury.

It wasn't like that. He hailed to me and I stopped. I had not idea about what he wanted initially. I get hailed from time to time by people looking for lost dogs, etc. Now that I recognize him, he'll have to sic LE on me to get me to stop.
I'm into deescalation. If he leaves me alone, I'll do the same. I just ride my bike to get my exercise. If someone else has an agenda, that is on them.
