No. A peace officer can skip the class and pay a reduced fee if he gets a letter from his agency.

If you catch a suspension or otherwise cannot carry under your dept creds......

Bypassing the background check is huge for me. I have a very common name that I share with many others. One of those others shares not only my first name, middle initial, and last name but also my birth date. Did I mention he is a felon?
So, even if I were a commissioned officer I would still keep my CHL.
BTW, since getting my CHL I no longer get calls from the FBI wanting to know if I ever had a NJ DL.

I plan on keeping it current. It's only 25 bucks to renew if I remember correctly, I can afford 5 bucks a year.
