on the DPS CHL site under FAQ it states "Under the Texas Concealed Handgun Licensing Act you are only required to have your license with you whenever you are carrying a concealed handgun" so the way I take that in Texas anyway if im not carrying I don't have to show leo my chl because I don't even have to have it on me

That's correct. It should have been taught to you in class. HOWEVER, once the officer in Texas runs your drivers license they will see you have a CHL they may come back and ask if you are carrying, or if they don't understand the law correctly may think you are supposed to present it no matter. So, I will usually just present it even if not carrying and let the officer ask if they choose to.

I think that's where there can be problems when chl holders and leo's interpet things differently

and no I don't believe that was mentioned in my class

This was discussed in my class and my instructor agreed with Keith. His point was why let the officer find out via the license check. Just show him if you're carrying or not and avoid the surprise. As far as the OP is concerned I would leave the CHL home as the law states you don't need to have it with you if you're not carrying.

if you saw my earlier posts thats what I said that I would be honest and show leo my dl and chl as I am doing no wrong

instead of trying to remember laws of several states regarding showing your chl when asked for id I think it best just volunteer it up with your dl and if your not carrying state that if asked

That story is my worst nightmare. You've got a CHL that shows up on the computers in states where it isn't valid and as such indicates that you might be carrying..
It's an absolute concern to me every year when driving through Illinois.
In the Illinois case, I disassemble the firearm(s). I lock the components in a safe, put that safe in a part of the vehicle that isn't accessible from the inside and further separate the ammo.
If that isn't enough I'm not sure what else to do.

that's why I will volunteer up my chl with my dl because even if its a reciprocal state you have to go that states and a earlier poster gave a website that has to do with other states and laws but instead of researching and trying to remember what states require you to show leo your out of state chl even if your not carrying I think ill play it safe and give it with my dl and state im not carrying

just because some people say your chl info wont come up in another state when stopped doesn't mean that it cannot

it seems a lot of people have trouble being forthcoming in this matter

What do you mean?

I mean other people have stated why would you give up your chl if not carrying or if your going to certain states I wouldn't and have read in other posts answering leo with one word like being evasive

Oklahoma law states that you should give them your CHL with your DL when asked for ID.

Louisianna law states that you are to disclose that you are armed when approached by an LEO in an official capacity. In other words, you don't wait until he asks for ID.
